Loux becomes Mr. Friday Night Lightup

August 16th, 2009, 9:42 am · 4 Comments · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

In 8 of the 9 games Shane Loux has Athletics Angels Baseballpitched in since he returned to action July 21, either the Angels or their opponents have scored double-figure runs.

The one exception was a near thing: On July 29, Loux worked in a 9-3 Angels victory over Cleveland.

This is not to make an excuse for  Friday’s seven-run disaster in Baltimore, but it was the first time Loux had pitched since the previous Friday’s blowout loss to the Rangers.

In an unrelated development, there’s an experienced reliever suddenly available, and I mean experienced. Plus, he knows how to pitch at Fenway Park, which might come in handy for some team in the postseason.

Mike Timlin, 43, asked for his release from Triple-A Colorado Springs, since the Rockies had no room for him currently on the major-league roster of the NL Wild Card leaders.

It was stressed that the parting of ways was not performance-related.

Timlin has pitched in 1,058 games in an MLB career that began in 1991 with Toronto.

I know the Angels won’t try him out — he’s no Rudy Seanez.

Can’t argue with you calling Timlin experienced. So is every 43 year old unemployed reliever who posted a full season 5.66 ERA at age 42.

Yes, every pitcher who has a bad year is done. Take a look of this decade of Jamie Moyer, and see how many times he should have been done, and how often he bounced back … in his 40s.

By experience I was referring to the 1,058 games Timlin pitched in. While we’re reciting stats, that’s more than Darren Oliver (509) and Brian Fuentes (484) combined.

    Hi Earl-

I just saw on ESPN website in MLB section…Peter Gammons claims Padres waived Heath Bell and the Angels claimed him and are working out a deal?? Any truth to this…i thought i was dreaming.

This has nothing to do with this post, but Plunkett did a great job on the story on Adenhart’s dad. A really good newspaper story.
