Yankees fans are the worst

October 13th, 2009, 8:32 am · 73 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

Oh, Angels fans, you were so pleased to dispatch Boston and its sociopathic, self-entitled fans, but it’s no time to let your guards down. The Yankees fans are arguably worse.

Violent, homophobic, amoral, disloyal. They ride in on the Long Island Rail Road* so they can dance to Cotton-Eyed Joe during the seventh-inning stretch**. (Seriously, Cotton-Eyed Joe? Even if you are specifically looking for a bad song to play at a stadium, there are so many awesome bad songs. How about The Sign? How about Living on a Prayer? How about Two Princes, or Informer, or I’m a Believer, or Fly, or Dancing With Myself?)

Anyhow, here is your evidence, and be prepared for some profanity sprinkled throughout:

Never leave an ax around your big-screen TV Yankee fan:

The B train doesn’t go to Long Island.

They don’t play Cotton Eye Joe during the 7th inning stretch, they play God Bless America and then Take Me Out To The Ballgame.

    FIX YO FACTCHECKIN’

    • sammiller says:

B train takes you to Penn Station, where you would take Long Island Railroad home, no?

    • Donnybaseball says:

This is a ridiculous attack on the sterotype of the NYer not even the yankee fans. It was done by an iggnorrant, jelous, worried, angel fan who has obviously no idea what it is like to go to a game with real fans who are knowledgable and care about their team.
Sorry life is not as laidback as it is in LA LA land. NYers are harder and more street smart because we have to when you live in a city as big and diverse as NYC.

The Angel fans, although they are better then the Dodger fans still are not in the same league on a whole as yankee, met, sox (both red and white) fans when it comes to baseball. For him to even say we (I say we because of my loyalty) are, “Violent, homophobic, amoral, disloyal.” is upsurd. Maybe he was in Yankee stadium and said something he shouldn’t have. I have only seen 3 fights in the 20+ years of going to Yankee games. One was between a guy who spilled a beer on the other guys girlfriend on purpose prevoking the fight and the others between Yankee and Sox fans during their games. Which can get rowdy only because Sox fans love to talk as much as possible and drink like prohibition is about to start again. What homophobic anything can listen to the Village people and dance and sing along every night?? And the crown jewel of stupidity Disloyal. That is a joke. The fans have been there since the beginning and have never left even during my childhood when we didn’t make the playoff from the time I was born until the time I was in high school. The loyalty stems allthe way from the management to the fans. The fans keep coming and watching and the management has a commitment to winning. When you win as much as we have in our history there will always be haters, I don’t agree with all of the things the franchise has done, but I do appreciate and feel honored to have been brought up here and root for a team who’s management is so committed to winning. That’s why you play, to win, not just to go through the motions this isn’t little league or a rec league for exercise this is the majors.

  • More East Coast bias this morning from Dan Patrick.

Last week, he dismissed John Lackey’s effort in Game #1. He said Lackey is “an innings eater” and “someone you don’t think about.”

This morning, he was interviewing Joe Buck, who will be calling Game #1 this Friday night for Fox. Patrick repeatedly said “You’ve got the Yankees game.” Not the ‘Yankees-Angels” game. He said the “Yankees” game.

Buck went on to praise the Angels, calling them the most balanced team in recent years. He also said there was now a possibility of an Angels-Dodgers Freeway Series. Patrick immediately brought up the Yankees-Mets series in 2000. Wouldn’t talk about Angels-Dodgers, just kept going back to Yankees-Mets.

    Sheesh.

  • LiLi says:

I can believe it. Went to Boston once - once. There I found some of the rudest - and I mean blatantly rude - people on the planet. If it’s worse in NY, no thank you.

    • poptart00 says:

Boston Fans are way worse than Yankees fans in their home stadium. We actually found some very nice people to chat with at Yankee stadium. The fans were very rude and loud in Boston.

  • Martin Short says:

As a lifelong Yankee Stadium attendee, I found your article, which could have been humorous, if done properly, pretty insulting (not to mention riddled with factual errors about the trains, the songs, and more).
In any stadium-sized crowd anywhere, you will find your share of imbalanced or just plain drunk folks. But the majority of us, like you, are just there to see our team play ball, dude, not to give anyone a hard time.
Your article reminded me of the time Lynn Cheney appeared on Jon Stewart. She tried to show how rude New Yorkers were and how wonderful folks were in Wyoming. Instead she just came off mean-spirited and self-righteous.

  • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

Haven’t been to the new Yankee Stadium, but the old one was one of my favorite places in sports, primarily because of the atmosphere.

Wonder if Mrs. Cheney checked with the Matthew Shepard family?

  • Gene says:

Is this a serious article? Holy Cow! I have been living in Anaheim Hills for 20 years and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had stuff thrown at me during Angels- Yankees games. I am a lifelong Yankees fan, who goes to the game usually by myself, or with a sibling, just wanting to support my team. Angels fans are some of the rudest, clueless, foul mouthed fans I’ve ever been around.

My neighbor is an Anaheim Cop who works games all the time, and he agrees that Angels fans are usually the one’s instigating trash talk, and violence at the games.

Just a few years back I took a buddy with me, who happens to be an Angels fan. i told him before we arrived that I will not say a word to anyone, and before long someone will get in my face, just for having a Yankees hat on. He thought I was full of it, but sure enough, after the Angels took the lead, some 50′ish man with his two teenage sons, turns around and starts talking trash, while leaving the game. He got so worked up, that he actually poked me in the eye while trying to make a point. My buddy instantly jumped on the guy and pounced him. LOL. I never had a chance to go after the guy because he was already on the ground in a headlock. the police came, and took the guy away…How sweet! What a fine example he set for his kids.

My friend was dumbfounded and embarrassed.

Go to a Yanks- Angels game at Yankees stadium and people won’t even give you a second glance. You see, Yankees fans respect the game and can appreciate a quality team. Angels fans can’t ever seem to get the chip off of their shoulders, for being such a bad team, for such a long time. Heck, it’s not our fault.

Enjoy your team and respect opposing fans. Yankees fans help Artie sell the place out, and that helps you get better players, get it?

    • LetsGoMets says:

“You see, Yankees fans respect the game and can appreciate a quality team.”

      HAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAAHHAHAH…

      HAHAHHAAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAH!!!!

    • Afan says:

You’ve been living in Anaheim HIlls for 20 years, and you go to Angels games to root for the Yankees?

How pathetic is that? Why don’t you just move back to the Bronx and stay there?

    • TheCoop says:

On the contrary - Yankees fans are some of the most narcissistic, know-nothing, frontrunning fans in the history of sports fandom. I visited Angel Stadium over the summer and I absolutely loved the fans and the stadium and would do anything to go back for the World Series. Which btw will be played there.

    • IHATELAA says:

Gene ~ I have the SAME experiences at Angels stadium! Being a life-long Yankees fan and attending several Yankees’ games over the years, I have NEVER even seen Yankees’ fans treat other fans the way Angels fans treat us, period!!! I NEVER go w/o having some a-hole Angels fan say obnoxious and vile things to me just because I am wearing my Yankees gear! And this has been totally unprovoked on my part!

As I just reminded Mark Whicker, he needs to check his facts and he’ll see that Angels fans have actually KILLED people at Angels stadium…….one specifically comes to mind that happened several years ago at Angels Stadium ~ an Angels fan was arguing w/a Yankees fan on the way out of the stadium. There were several witnesses to that. I know this because the cops interviewed these witnesses……………..why did they need to interview these witnesses?? Because the Yankee fan was found stabbed to death!!!

      • LetsGoMets says:

Interesting. Can you provide a source for this stabbing at Angels Stadium story?

      • CK says:

Somehow I think if you are a fan of the opposing team going to an Angels game, you’re going to get heckled. I would never ever go to a Yankees game in an Angels jersey. I would sit and watch and not say a word no matter what stadium I’m in (Yankees or otherwise) because I don’t want to get killed. Just seems like common sense to me.

      • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

Sorry. I guess I overrated your sense of irony. My point to Sam was, Angel Stadium leads Yankee Stadium in fan deaths this year, 1-0.

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

I am trying to get from the Bronx to Long Island. What train do I take again? I guess I could ask John Rocker.

  • brianguy says:

I still say Boston fans are the worst. it’s almost toss up between Dodgers and Yankees for 2nd place. Yankees have been humbled in recent years, so their fans seem to be a bit more tame and tolerable as of right now. so I’ll say Dodgers are 2nd…

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

… and I also can’t wait until Batting Stance Guy does his take on Cotton Eyed Joe guy above.

  • Let’s not forget that back in 1986 someone hit Wally Joyner in the forearm with a switch blade thrown from the upper deck at the old Yankee Stadium.

I’m sure that story is in the Register archives if one of you scribes would look it up. The date was August 26, 1986, according to the source I found.

I also seem to recall tales of batteries being thrown on the field by Yankees fans.

  • Art says:

By the way, I am truly enjoying the fake Mark Whicker posts.

  • Stay Class, OC Register.

  • Chawk says:

I have been to many Yankee vs Angel games and never experienced any Angel fans causing problems, The OC is laid back we don’t fight we throw beach balls around. No I have been at games where the Yankee’s fan cheer pretty agressively for their teams but nothing too big.

I have been to the old Yankee Stadium, glad I got to see some games in it!, and I wore my Angels gear and was not hassled at all.

My good friend is a Yankee’s fan and we switch off Stadiums every year. Lots of fun.

What is being mentioned is the exception not the rule. Grow up.

  • Angel Al says:

Dodjer aka Raider fans are ok as long as they wear their court ordered ankle bracelets. Roidsox fans are just bitter at the world. They were persecuted for so long and have a “Yankee” inferiority complex. Both are classless and belong in the zoo.

  • TheJekyl says:

Lets set up some metal detectors at each stadium and count the weapons confiscated afterwards. LAA - 1,956 NYY - 1,243. That’s about the only thing LAA is going to win at folks :)

    • brianguy says:

you confuse Angel stadium with Dodger stadium, apparently

    • Angel Al says:

THE JEKYL and Brainless, very funny, you must be kidding. If you can read big words, try comparing the crime stats of NY vs OC. Also check the Angel playoff stats recently against your bloated payroll of a team. Keep talking smack just like your loser friends in Beantown. The final outcome will shut you up.

  • LTSports says:

Hey, nice job on this. You really got a great variety of clips that back up your opinion lol.

  • SoCal Bandwagonners says:

Two things…First, there are idiot fans of every team. Always have been, always will be, particularly when a 12 pack is involved. Second, I hate the Yankees.

But there’s nothing more “hilarious” than a So. Cal paper calling NY fans out for “Cotton-Eyed Joe”. Have you forgotten about the Rally Monkey? How about Thunderstix? How about that the Angel Stadium crowds seem incapable of simply rooting their team on without the aid of artificial noise makers or prompts from the neon scoreboards (you’d think such great fans wouldn’t need a MAKE SOME NOISE graphic when their team had the bases loaded). Reminds me of the time the self-proclaimed Angel diehard sitting next to me spent two innings complaining about an Angel player’s swing at a pitch that was way up and away. I guess the “diehard” couldn’t figure out that it was a pitchout and he was protecting the runner stealing second.

    • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

Sounds like one of our bloggers.

If they still do the same Cotton Eyed Joe video, the guy looks just like Clemens.

And there are few things more electric than when the stadium blasts out the song that Angel fans absolutely don’t want to hear: Enter Sandman, which brings in Rivera.

  • Angels fan in chicago says:

    LET’S GO ANGELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM says:

“Cotton-Eyed Joe” sounds like Beethoven’s Fifth compared to “Build Me Up, Buttercup.”

  • I did a Google on “Yankee Stadium crime rate” and came up with this February 2009 article from a publication called The Bronx Beat:

    *****

Following citywide trends, crime in the Bronx has dropped during the last decade and has hovered around the same levels for the past five years. But the Bronx continues to hold the city’s highest violent crime rates, leading all boroughs in murders, rapes and robberies.

Data compiled by The Bronx Beat from city police records and census figures show that in 2008, the rate of murders in the Bronx was 52.4 percent higher than the city average. The rate of rapes was 43.9 percent higher, and the rate of robberies was higher than the city average by nearly a third.

  • ROBERT says:

    ANTI GAY INSULTS??!!

    ARE YOU SERIOUS?

  • ROBERT says:

I’LL TELL YA SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YANKEE FANS. THEY KNOW THE GAME. YOU CAN TALK BASEBALL WITH ANYONE OF THEM. GO TO THE BIG A AND TRY DOING THAT WITH SOME OC BIMBO

  • Wilma says:

Apparently working at the OC Register because you can’t get a job at a real newspaper! Talk about not checking your facts, being completely biased (even if ment to be) and not funny at all. You might want to try working in the fast good industry because your writing skills are seriously lacking!

I have been to both stadiums and have to say at least the Yankee fans are not riding the bandwagon, they are the most loyal there are. Most stadiums sell more seats when the Yankees are in town. Yankee stadium is sold out for most games and you cant say that about many teams.

Boston fans are probably the rudest and the loudest but still loyal after a long dry spell.

And every guy uses gay slurs when in a shouting match at a ballgame, I guess all fans are homophobes then.

    Seriously Wicker, get another job….

  • Max says:

These Yankee fans are funny. They come to Angels stadium and talk trash all the time. Every time the Yankees get a hit they feel it necessary to turn to the crowd and taunt them. Of course they belive they know everything about baseball. This would be true if you were only talking about the Yankees. The best thing these Yankee fans can do is shut up and enjoy the beat down coming their way.

  • YankDR says:

And I thought folks followed Baseball to escape from the rigors of everyday life! Sit back with your peanuts and crackerjacks and enjoy America’s past time.

  • Yankee fan says:

    You stay classy, LA.

  • Yanks Fan says:

    Angels fans are scared….very scared

    hahahahaha

  • matt says:

see the funny thing about this would be that I’m sure, not I KNOW every team has the same things happen at their stadium.

You are going to tell me that every single angel fan would be over the top nice to an apposing team’s fan? NO.

The fact that this was allowed to be posted to an actual news site and not a fan’s blog is crazy. Half this article is not factual, and you went to youtube and searched “angry” “crazy” “asshole” angels fan, you’d get multiple video.

As for the kids fighting at a young age video, that’s funny.

Boston fans are the worst. At least Yankee fans have something to back up their arrogance. That’s a lot of championships. I’m sure people who aren’t Laker fans hate us too. But we have nothing to apologize for.
Boston fans, on the other hand…
Most of them aren’t even from Boston. Those are the worst–the kind that go to college there and start wearing those stupid “B” hats. The green caps are the worst.
