Thoroughly enjoyed Mark Saxon’s Big Apple vs. SoCal culture wars slide show, although it made me yearn for one of the few things I liked about New York.
Corned beef on rye from Carnegie Deli. Simply the best, and worth the hassle.
One of the ways I have been able to swear off corned beef is to maintain I won’t have one unless it’s at Carnegie.
Despite being Los Angeles-born (about the time the Korean War ended) and a lifelong Southern Californian, I have not been to Langer’s Delicatessen.
I was stunned to learn Saxon’s sources picked its trademark sandwich over Carnegie’s, because it’s not even the same thing — although it’s closer than apples and oranges.
It’s OK. My doctor won’t let me have pastrami, either.
What else do I miss about New York?
Old Yankee Stadium (where I watched Tim Salmon make his major-league debut for the Angels), the Statue of Liberty, even Madison Square Garden, to a degree.
What else do I like about New York?
Bronx-born ctress Ellen Barkin, for sure. Mira Sorvino, too.
And P.J. Clarke’s. Definitely.

With John Lackey scheduled for Games 1 and 5, that’s two probable starts behind the plate for Jeff Mathis. …
One of the truly scary things about the Yankees is, they swept the Twins in the ALDS despite hitting .225 as a team.
