NEW YORK
The Angels got the monkey off their backs – only to run into King Kong.
The New York Yankees, baseball’s $200 million gorilla, ended the Angels’ post-season run with a 5-2 defeat in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series Sunday night.
The win sends the Yankees into the World Series for the 40th time in franchise history, this time against the Phillies.
For the Angels, the loss sends them into a winter of uncertainty with the list of potential free-agent departures including key players like Vladimir Guerrero, John Lackey, Chone Figgins and Bobby Abreu.
In the end, the Angels were done in by an offense that couldn’t keep up with Yankees’ deep lineup. They were outscored 32-18 in the six games and at the end their best hitter was … Jeff Mathis?
Mathis led off the third inning Sunday with his fifth double in the series. Two outs later, Abreu drove him in with an RBI single to right when Yankees starter Andy Pettitte hung an 0-and-1 curveball.
That was just about the only mistake Pettitte made in the game.
The Angels’ only other scoring threat against him came in the sixth inning after Pettitte retired the first two batters, the slumping Figgins and Abreu once again failing to set the table for the middle of the order. Torii Hunter beat out an infield single and went to third when Guerrero hit a pitch nearly off the ground and dropped it into right field for a double.
But Kendry Morales bounced back to the mound, Pettitte knocking it down near his face and throwing Morales out at first to end the inning.
Already the all-time leader in post-season starts and innings pitched, Pettitte became the winningest pitcher in post-season history (breaking a tie with John Smoltz at 15) by holding the Angels to just that one run on seven hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.
Angels starter Joe Saunders walked a tightrope through three innings to match Pettitte, stranding six runners on base in that time. But he tripped up in the fourth and never made it out.
With Mathis and Morales having given him a 1-0 lead, Saunders walked Robinson Cano to start the fourth then gave up a ground-ball single to left to Nick Swisher (batting .103 in the post-season when the game started).
Melky Cabrera bunted the runners over and Saunders walked Derek Jeter to load the bases. Johnny Damon singled in two runs to give the Yankees the lead and Mark Teixeira reloaded the bases on an infield single.
Working carefully to Alex Rodriguez, Saunders fell behind in the count 3-and-1 then threw a fastball at the knees. But home-plate umpire Dale Scott called it ball four, forcing in another run.
The walk was Saunders’ fifth in the game and Angels manager Mike Scioscia pulled him.
The game stayed close into the eighth thanks to Darren Oliver and Ervin Santana and the Angels briefly made it a one-run game, 3-2, when Guerrero drove in his seventh run of the post-season with a two-out RBI single off Mariano Rivera in the eighth.
It was the first post-season earned run off the Yankees closer since Game 2 of the 2000 World Series against the Mets.
But the momentum didn’t last. The Angels misplayed two bunts in the bottom of the eighth – Howie Kendrick dropped one throw and Scott Kazmir threw the other over Kendrick’s head – leading to two more Yankee runs without benefit of a hit. The errors were the seventh and eighth of the series by the Angels (seven in the three games at Yankee Stadium).
OOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…………. BOO HOO!!!! GET OVER IT!!!!
And for the a-hole who called me on my comment about saying that the Yankees would win in the 5th, NO I’M NOT BLOND, JUST HAD ONE TOO MANY MARGARITAS…………………SO BITE ME!!!!
Tomorrow Arte will announce that the Angels will no longer be the Los Angeles Angels but will be called the New York Angels for marketing proposes but will continue to play in Anaheim California. “”"”"”Long live the New York Angels.”"”"”"
The Yankees played a great series. Jeter was Mr. Consistency, ARod as much as I hate him was Mr. Clutch, Sabathia, Mariano and on and on. They kept coming until the Angels broke.
I kept waiting to hear any one of the Yankees or their manager give some kind of similar compliment to the Angels. But as it is shown by sassyEXnyr, (what’s the matter? couldn’t handle the NY winters?) and blackjacktaco that would take a certain amount of class that the Yankees and their fans don’t seem to have.
And before you start your squawking think about this: Give me $213 MILLION and let’s see what I can do with it.
AngelFanInVA~ first of all……….if you’re such a fan, why not move to So. CA? And yeah, that’s right, I couldn’t take the NY winters, as I’m sure many (even in VA) wouldn’t be able to handle! That’s what’s so great about this country…….we have the freedom to up and move to any state we so desire!
As for your comment about the money angle winning for the Yankees, that’s sooooooo worn out AND if it were true, then how do you account for the Yankees not winning the division title since 2003 AND not winning the World Series since 2000??? Your statement doesn’t make any sense because since 2001 there have been several different teams who have won the World Series who haven’t won a title in 50+ years, some even NEVER winning a title…………such as your beloved Angels! So get over it! Your argument doesn’t hold any water!
First!
I dont care about sports!
BREAKING NEWS…THIS JUST IN! The Rally Monkey was caught in the Monkey Cage at the Bronx Zoo getting his salad tossed. He was despondant after his beloved Angels lost…so he took a stroll over to the Bronx Zoo only to get abducted and abused by a bandito monkees with Noo Yawk accents. Poor Monkey!!!
Zookeeper ~ Too funny!!!! I literally am laughing my a** off!!!!!!
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
SEASON OVER, angels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
angels, 3rd place losers for the 2010 season. You heard it here first.
Get rid of Kazmir he sucks! Should of put in Weaver.
Lots of free agents this off season. Hope we sign Lackey and Abreau.
From Nick Adenhart to beating Boston this playoffs, Angel fans keep your heads up high.
See you back at the yard in April 2010.
Go Phillies!!!
Thank God! Life can return to normal and no more traffic jams around the stadium. Besides, it’s football season. GO CHARGERS!
BWAAAAAAAAH. Angels fans will not enjoy cheesesteak in Philly.
That stupid Rally Monkey will leave that douchebag Anaheim town tomorrow.
Pettitte made plenty of mistakes, the hitters just didn’t capitalize. Hunter in particular had numerous pitches to drive, and couldn’t get it done.
Overall, the series was lost due to errors in the field and by the manager.
Guess Scioscia will have to wait until next year for Figgins and Rivera to reward his blind loyalty to them.
Scioscia didn’t lose those games, but he certainly didn’t give them an edge or put their best on the field.
The Anaheim Angels got in and won the World Series, the LA Angels can’t even get in the World Series. …poor Arte!

Dude, are you 55 or 5 years old right now? There is no such thing as a curse. Get over the LA name thing and move on. What was YOUR Dodgers reason for tanking in the NLDS for the second straight year…the curse of the bad Dodger Dog? The Curse of ManROID? - You are a Freakin’ Buffoon!
TRUE Angels Fans - Don’t worry about the haters on here. These are just bandwagon Yankee fans. Do you really think the Yanks have a chance against the Phillies seeing how poorly the Yanks played against us with our cold bats, questionable pitching and numerous errors? The Yanks only dominated us in ONE game in the ALCS.
The Phils will win their second straight WS title and Georgie Porgie will have to spend another 1/4 billion to TRY and buy his 2010 WS title.
****HALOS - 2009***
(Thanks for a great season-from your fans who stuck with you NO MATTER what the team name is, good times and bad!)
Los Angeles in the name isn’t a curse. It’s a marketing decision. We played some good ball and there are some things that you can go back and forth on. The series very well could be tied 3-3 right now. I could make arguments on some things with how the umpires handled the game, the strike zone and the convenient way the Yankee’s ALCS Championship gear was ALREADY being sold on MLB.com even before the start of game 6. Instead, I’m going to resign myself to this was another good year, we beat Boston and 3rd times a charm for the Yankee’s. We got them twice previous and it was their turn this time around.
Well said J-Dizzle. It’s also funny how everyone moans and groans about the Angels postseason blues.
Here’s the Yanks postseason blues this decade:
2001 - Lost the WS to the D-backs
2002 - Lost the ALDS to the Angels
2003 - Lost the WS to the Marlins
2004 - Lost the ALCS to the RedSox after being 3-0 in the series
2005 - Lost the ALDS to the Angels
2006 - Lost the ALDS to the Tigers
2007 - Lost the ALDS to the Indians
Angel fans think we have it rough? Just think what will happen if the Phils beat the Yanks this year. Mr. Steinbrenner will have to increase payroll to $300 million. If you can’t beat’em – BUY’EM!!
Look at that though man… 2 of those playoff exits were by none other than the Angels! The worst one has to be that 2004 series when they were up 3-0 and got swept the next 4 games. This was a good series and people need to see that the Angels very well could have won it as well. A few blunders, some very favorable Yankee calls and strike zone and that Fuentes blunder against A-Roid.
Scot Kazmir throws like a girl.
SICK AND TIRE OF THIS EVERY YEAR!!!!
Yeah yeah yeah it sucks but it’s still better than being a Dodgers fan.
bye bye angels very good year but see u 2010
They don’t deserve to go in the play offs. They are like a broken record & I belive this is the 4th time since they pulled of the miracle & won the World Series!!! Gosh was that ever a shock…
Moreno must be paying Scioscia a lot of money to keep managing….
cuz Mike is superstitious and knows the curse can’t be broken until the name ANAHEIM returns to their jerseys. LAA…..what’s that? Lower Anaheim Angels? If you don’t believe in baseball curses…..
did you see the bottom of the 8th errors? Now you’ve seen one.
Change the name.or continue to suffer Arte.
To the posters who believe that the “LA” name has anything to do with winning or losing - “Dee Dee Dee” (ala Carlos Mencia). There is no curse.
This is 2009 – FAIRY TALES DO NOT EXIST!!!
What next, will you be waiting for the Great Pumpkin this Saturday night? Good grief, morons!
Took us what, 30 or so years to win our first World Series? Yankee’s haven’t won a World Series since some time before the Angels won their first one in 2002? So what’s the Yankee excuse for not winning one in over 10 years? It’s only been 7 since ours. The Cubs are cursed if anyone is.
Dude ~ the Yankees won the World Series in 2000! Should they (and they will) win this series, that’s 9 yrs, not 10. You are obviously numerically-challenged!
sassyexnyr - don’t be so cocky with your team. Yes, the Yanks are a great team, but if they play the Phils like they played against the Angels - the series will be over in 5 with the Phils taking the WS. Sad, but true. The Yanks only dominated us in one game (#4) - With the Angels cold bats, questionable pitching and bonehead errors on the field and on the bases, you should have swept us.
Good Luck!
Angel fans hold your heads up high. We just ran into a better Yankee team. We have a good nucleus of young players to build around plus a management committed to winning, which is more then most teams can say.
Yeah those poor suffering Dodger fans, in the 46 years it took for the Angels to win one championship, the Dodgers won only 5.
I predict another 45 year drought for the Angels.
1961 they were founded as an expansion team known then as the Los Angeles Angels. They won the World Series in 2002. Would be 41 years not 46. The Dodgers have been around since 1890, 71 years older then the Angels and haven’t won a World Series in 20 years. 71 years for the Dodgers to claim 4 more World Series wins then the Angels, and during times when less teams existed then today. Not to downplay the Dodgers history of wins but it goes without saying. There are huge gaps in time of the history of the franchises and as a result are incomparable with regards to how many championships each has won.
Now i know why they bitch about walking batters.Between the errors and walks burying this team, we might have won the series. Deepen the staff and a big bat is still needed. We can always contend in the west.We forget how many injuries this team overcame this year.MLB temas need to stomp out these guys playing off-season.Wears them down. They must stay on top of them and make sure they are working out in the weight room.
The young pitchers need to add a pitch and we know we have the best owner and manager.Give the team what it needs.
bad things happen to teams who try and hide where they come from…angelenos couldn’t be prouder of the misfit organization who stole their name in the name of $$$. hey arte, enjoy the $, it doesn’t get you “W”. if i was anaheim, i’m thrilled they don’t have my town’s name attached to this disaster, the curse lives…the tradition continues.
1961 The team was founded as the Los Angeles Angels. We didn’t “steal” any team names. Just went back to the root name (had to keep Anaheim for contract reasons) and recaptured on the media market. Check your history.
Speaking of curses, if the Angels are cursed for not winning a World Series in the last 7 years, what’s the Dodgers excuse for the last 20?
The Yankees played a great series. Jeter was Mr. Consistency, ARod (as much as I hate him) was Mr. Clutch, and Sabathia and Mariano and on and on.
I was waiting for one of the Yankee players or, hopefully, their manager to give a similar compliment about the Angels. How they began with three starters on the DL, the sudden and tragic death of another. But it never happened because as you can plainly see by the comments made by sassyEXnyr, (what? you couldn’t handle the NY winters so you came here?), and blackjacktaco that would take a certain amount of class. Even $213 Million doesn’t buy that.
Curse? How old are you?
This is 2009 – FAIRY TALES DO NOT EXIST!!!
What next, will you be waiting for the Great Pumpkin this Saturday night? Good grief, morons!
It’s alright Dark, they seem to think that 7 years without a World Series is suppose to be a curse for the Angels. They forget when the last time the Yankess won a World Series was much less the Dodgers. They also forget that the original name for the Angels was in fact the Los Angeles Angels in 1961.
Wow.. here’s a bit of Yankee history:
New York Yankees (1913–present)
New York Highlanders (1903–1912)
Baltimore Orioles (1901–1902)
They were the original Orioles and the Orioles of today were the original Milwaukee Brewers and the Brewers of today were the Seattle Pilots. Amazing how history goes.
