Angels shed more than $20 million in salary

October 28th, 2009, 10:40 am · 4 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

It’s easy to  conclude that, with the Angels potentially losing Vladimir Guerrero ($15 million in 2009), John Lackey ($10 million), Bobby Abreu ($6 million), Chone Figgins ($6 million), Darren Oliver (almost $4 million) and Kelvim Escobar ($9.5 million) to free agency, the club now has freed up $50 million to spend this offseason on resigning or acquiring free agents. The real number is considerably less than that — though still substantial.

Some returning Angels get automatic raises in their contracts. Some are arbitration eligible and will get raises. And Scott Kazmir’s salary has already been added to the books.

Here’s what each Angel made in 2009, and what they’ll cost the Angels in 2010. Arbitration, pre-arbitration and signed players are under the Angels’ control next year. Any bold numbers in the 2010 column indicate that the player is arbitration eligible, and I’m just guessing on what he’ll be awarded or agree to based on previous, similar players. For players who bounce between the majors and minors, it’s hard to figure exactly what they received (or will receive), but the difference is ultimately a rounding error. All other figures are from Cot’s Baseball Contracts, and are unofficial and possibly wrong. This is just a guide.

..
So, roughly speaking, the difference from 2009’s Opening Day payroll: $23.5 million.

I’m open to corrections to the figures or my presumptions. Otherwise, let’s consider this the neighborhood for what the Angels have to spend this offseason, barring an increase in payroll.

  • Anyone who pays Mike Napoli $4m ought to have their head examined. He’s a horrible catcher and has only shown glimpses of being a decent hitter. Anyone with a swing that big can hit 20 HR’s. If Arte is only planning on spending $23.5m in contract value this offseason, we’re seriously screwed. John Lackey and Bobby Abreu would cost that much. The future is bright though - let’s hope we dump Fuentes after 2010 and then we lose Speier’s salary too. I suspect Arte is willing to spend more in 2010 than he did this year. The Halos went deeper in the playoffs which generated much more cash($8.50 for a beer instead of $6.50 haha) and they get the All-Star game which is certainly going to generate some revenue. This is a year to invest since we’ll be dropping some dead weight in 2010 and 2011. Let’s hope we find a sucker to take some of Matthews salary.

I agree with AFMike. Napoli can be dealt for prospects and let Wilson back up Mathis next season. That’ll save us another 3.6 right there (Wilson will be making the minimum) I believe that Wood’s time has come and needs to play every day to see what we got. 3rd is the most likely scenario so Figgins is probably gone. Vlady, I know, will play for a lot less to stay in So Cal. Not sure if we want to clog up the system anymore than necessary at that position (DH/OF). I think Arte will spend more (just cause he’s competitive) but will spend it wisely. I think Abreu is a must have. He’ll be needed to teach Aybar to lead off with patience. Izturis is a must in case the B Wood experiment doesn’t work as planned. As far as Lackey goes, I think he’ll want too much (not saying he doesn’t deserve it) but the Angels way is to develop young arms to move up and be inserted into the rotation without a lot of pressure on them (#5 starter with 4 vets). Just a question??? Think we could have used Cliff Lee?? He looked awfully strong against the Bankees last night.

Whoa whoa wait a minute. Nap has improved as a catcher and IS more than a decent hitter. When he’s hot he gets on a tear, granted when he’s not he is completely the opposite. Still, he can be clutch and, yes, he can most definitely hit the ball out of the ballpark but he also gets a lot of doubles and singles as well. Maybe he’s not the best catcher but I can see him easily sliding into the DH role in the future. I want to see what he can do with a full season of opportunity. Furthermore, you said, ” Anyone with a swing that big can hit 20 HR’s” . If its that easy, wouldn’t others be able to hit 20 HRs?

All things considered they’ll be well over last year’s payroll when it’s all said and done.
