ANAHEIM

On the first day eligible players can file for free agency, the Angels headed that off with one of their seven potential free agents by reaching agreement with outfielder Bobby Abreu on a two-year contract with a club option for 2012.Angels Twins Baseball

Abreu, 35, signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Angels on the eve of spring training this year. He hit .293 with 96 runs scored, 103 RBI and 30 stolen bases.

“I am very happy to sign this contract,” Abreu said in the team’s press release. “I really enjoyed my first season with the club. The Angels are a solid organization, with an outstanding team and great fans. With the talent we have, I look forward to the opportunity of post-season competition once again.”

Good signing. Now get to keeping Lackey and Figgins. Adios Vlad.

  • Steve_F says:

Is a Gary Matthews Jr. buyout the next major announcement? I’d want to get that resolved ASAP in order to clear that roster spot and I’m sure Matthews wants to find a new team ASAP.

  • bpsqwerty says:

as expected… good job Angels front office!

  • B Mac says:

I am pretty sure that Matthews is happy with his $10 million a year contract and the chance that he gets to play for a contender. This isn’t basketball where buyouts do occur and I am sure that no team is wiling to absorb that type of contract unless the Angels pick up the majority of it.

    • Steve_F says:

Buyouts occur in MLB too. Remember Bobby Bonilla?

    • lance says:

He asked to be traded. Also, didn’t the Dodgers buyout Andrew Jones? Send the dead weight packing!

      • LetsGoMets says:

The majority of MLB “buyouts” are not cut and dry. The player still gets the amount owed, and sometimes a lot more than that original contracted amount deferred over time. It’s financial restructuring which may save the club money in one year and help trim payroll for a season, but they still owe that money to the player.

Andruw Jones is still owed around $18 million from the Dodgers over the next 6 years.

Bobby Bonilla’s contract with the Mets was restructured in 2000 and he’s going to get paid around $30 million between 2011-2035 ($1.2 million per year over that time period). He was owed $5.9 million in 2000, but the Mets wanted him gone so badly, they had to agree to defer the money plus lots of interest.

  • James says:

Great news. Glad they got this done right away. Now go get Jason Bay and resign Lackey and Figgins.

  • Biggie says:

Yes, Lackey and Figgy are key. Jason Bay would be huge!!! We shall see what happens. Core of the team is there but could quickly dissapear this off-season.

  • haloducks says:

Glad this one is out of the way. Now let’s hope Lackey is next and they go after the Cuban pitcher Chapman. Vlad and Figgy will more than likely be with another team next season.

    • bpsqwerty says:

agreed 1000% Vlad and Figgy are gone, and I figured Abreu would likely be resigned first. Lackey was going to be the challenge, but really there are only a few teams even in the running for him. the biggest team rumored was the Yankees, but the Yankees can only buy so many players at a time.

Chapman sounds like an amazing prospect and I like the name.

  • Timo says:

If you guys think Vlad doesnt have a solid year at DH left in him you guys are nuts. If we get dont offer Vlad a contract we have to go get a DH anyways. So my question is….why not???? He’ll sign for less money. He had the most hits of all the Angles in the post season.

    • LA Guy says:

Why not sign Vlad? Cause he is a base clogger and a double play machine at this point in his career. His legs are gone, so he can’t get under the ball the way he used to. Abreu can DH and so can Rivera. They need a bat like Matt Holiday or Jason Bay in the middle of the lineup. We all love Vlad and are sad to see him leave, but hard hit ground balls are not going to get us to the World Series.

  • MaryS says:

Bobby we are so happy to have you for two more years! OC loves Abreu!

  • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

A very intriguing point you bring up there, Timo. Vlad’s close relationship with Mr. Moreno might well make that happen, and there’s no obvious DH replacement on the roster.

    • LetsGoMets says:

If the Yankees choose not to re-sign Hideki Matsui as their DH, should the Angels look to sign him instead?

      • austin says:

i think the angels could also grab jonny damon as a DH if figgins leaves and they dont sign vlad. put damon in the lead off spot and finally make room for brandon wood at 3rd.

      • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

That would be OK, except that if Vlad leaves I’d prefer a righthand bat. McCarver theorized last night that if Matsui leaves the Yankees he might want to play in Seattle with Ichiro.

        • my2sense says:

Sorry Mark, I don’t agree with Tim’s analysis. Im sure Matsui and Ichiro are close friends it’s all about the YEN. Also my ears can barely handle the screech that comes out of McCarver’s mouth.

        • LetsGoMets says:

Another potential DH option from the left side who if he’s healthy, can still hit bombs. Carlos Delgado.

Considering he was down almost all of 2009 after hip surgery, he’s almost certainly returning to the AL to be a DH for someone at a incentive-laden cut rate compared to the $16 million he got this season.

          • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

He’d be perfect if he could still play. Great guy. Angels could have gotten him when Florida hung him out there, but whiffed, as they did with Mike Lowell..

  • sassyexnyr says:

Hhhmmmmmmm, sounds like the Angels are trying to buy a world series…….something their fans always accuse the Yankees of……………me thinks they need a mirror!!!

THE NEW YORK YANKEES WIN THE WORLD SERIES TITLE FOR THE 27TH TIME AND NO ONE CAN CHALLENGE THAT!!!!!! YOU CAN PUT US ASIDE, BUT YOU’LL NEVER MAKE US GO AWAY!!!! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS…..NO TIME FOR LOSERS…….FOR WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS………OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m so tired of this yeller posting the same garbage on every page on the OCR. enough already. probably has a big fat head to go along with that mouth.

    • clint says:

I don’t see the Angels spending nearly $500 million dollars this offseason. $19 for Abreu and maybe another $150 million combined for a pitcher and two bats.

    • DAN M says:

well be pushing out the door next season jerky NY idiot!

    • haloducks says:

Big deal, bandwagoner. Nobody outside of NY cares about the Yanks buying another title…there is less to be exited about when your payroll is almost 100mil higher than the team with the 2nd highest payroll. What’s next, your going to brag that your high school baseball team beat a JR high school team. Baseball needs competative balance in a bad way. Anyways, GO ANGELS!

  • Frank in LA says:

This is great news. I hope it is the start of a flurry of activity from the Angels this off-season.

How many days until Spring Training???

  • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

    104.

  • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

pitchers and catchers, 2/17 or 18 or thereabouts.

  • Jimmy says:

    19 million for two years…

  • juan alvarez says:

good deal. now to re-sign john lackey. sign jason bay, matt holiday. and/or johnny damon. it would be better if the angles didnt resign figgy or vladdy

  • Mark says:

I love how people want to write off Figgins because of a bad playoff, sure he’s struggled in October again but the playoffs are such a small sample size compared to the regular season. No one is complaining about Arod’s performance this year, makes everyone forget about the previous 4-5 Octobers that were dismal at best.

Truth is Figgins could very well have been the biggest reason we were in the playoffs considering all the injuries to the rotation and some of our bigger bats. Leadoff hitters like Figgins don’t grow on trees. Does anyone really think Aybar could produce the way Figgins has in the leadoff spot? Damon can’t run the same way to create the same type of headache for defenses. You have to get to the playoffs first before you can worry about winning a title. There’s a reason why 20+ teams are interested in a player with Figgins skill set. Not only can he play just about every position on the field (and gold glove caliber third) but he will be giving defenses headaches for quite a few more years. I think to let Figgins go would be a huge mistake.

As far as Vladdy, if you look at the numbers he put up this year and project them to 550-600 at bats he had a productive year not to mention solid playoff. You can’t find that kind of consistant production very easily. Personally, i go to many games, and yes vlad has aged, but I think he has atleast a year or two of being very productive, not to mention the presence he has in the middle of the order, pitchers still have to respect him.

I’m not sold on Matt Holiday in the AL, and I’m not a big Jason Bay fan if he isn’t playing at fenway, remember Angel Stadium is alot bigger than Boston (he only hit 275 or so in a great hitters ballpark).

What the Angels really need is a true ace, and to sure up the bullpen. Lackey would be important to sign, then why not package wood some of our younger pitching prospects and Napoli for Roy Holiday or someone who would be lights out in October the way Sabathia and Cliff Lee were this year.

Also, get rid of GMJ, what a god awful signing that was. He might be the only person on the planet that thinks he is an everyday centerfielder.

Sorry for the long rant…….Tony - sign Figgins, Lackey, and Vlad if you can
