Angels’ Hunter wins ninth Gold Glove award

November 10th, 2009, 12:50 pm · 13 Comments · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Angels center fielder Torii Hunter has won his ninth consecutive 01hunterblog1American League Gold Glove, matching Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki on the team announced Tuesday.

They were joined in the outfield by one of the three newcomers on the AL team, Baltimore’s Adam Jones. The other first-timers were Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle.

The rest of the squad has a more familiar look: Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer; New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira and shortstop Derek Jeter; and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco.

The Gold Glove is Hunter’s second in as many seasons in Anaheim, continuing a long tradition of Gold-Glove Angels center fielders.

The other Angels center fielders honored were: Ken Berry (1972), Rick Miller (1978), Gary Pettis (1985-86), Devon White (1988-89), Jim Edmonds (1997-98) and Darin Erstad (2000, 2002).

Well deserved for a great player! The Angels are lucky to have him!

I’m still in awe that Derek Jeter won the Gold Glove for SS this year. In reality, Tex won it for him.

    Congrats to Tori Hunter !!!!

#9 is divine! great job Torii.

Derek Jeter is essentially the worst fielding SS in the AL so that’s pretty ridiculous. good job Tex, hope he buys you a car.

Hunter for President ‘10 (after Obama gets impeached)

    Congrats to Torii…well deserved.

Wish our Figgy could have won one..or even Erick Aybar..Both great at their positions.

  • Torii is the best in the business. The man works hard for his money and earns it. In the age of prima donna athletes, Torii has my vote for man of the year.

    Numbskull, very well said!

It’s sad - Aybar was a far superior shortstop than Jeter. He’s just a popular choice since no one knows Abyar yet. I suspect that will change as Jeter starts booting more and more balls in the next year or two.

Dude is such a stud. Way to go Torii. Toughest position to play on the field and we love watching you plan man.. Great year this year.

  • Randy says:

I can not think of a center fielder who deserves it more. Congrats.

  • InTheZONE says:

How much you want to bet gmj is at home telling his family, “that should’ve been his golden glove award!”

  • InTheZONE says:

Sorry…misquote….gmj telling his family, “that should’ve been MY golden glove award!”

  • Donna says:

Great job Torii, no one deserved it more than you. You are a GREAT
player and really fun to watch. Congrats also to you and our wonderful team for a fantasic year. We’ll get them next year. :)

  • Carlos says:

Yes, congrats to Torii, who at this point essentially has his name pre-punched on the ballot along with Ichiro. While both guys probably really did deserve the award, anyways, you have to feel for Frankln Gutierrez, who was pretty much head-and-shoulders the best outfielder in the game this year. Too bad for him gold gloves are intended for offensive-minded superstars who happen to play solid defense.
