Reagins on Holliday: Not interested

November 17th, 2009, 6:11 am · 8 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

Tony Reagins told the LA Times that his focus is not on free agent Matt Holliday, a Scott Boras client. “Our focus is not on him right now.”

So let’s revisit Fox Sports’ account from yesterday:

The Yankees, who need a left fielder, are interested.

The Red Sox, who need a left fielder, are interested.

The Angels, who need a power bat, are interested.

You’ll recall that Buster Olney shot down a Yankees connection yesterday. So, congratulations Boston? Or maybe Boras made up all three teams to try to milk St. Louis, the Mets or the Giants out of a few million more dollars.

Also in the Times story: Chone Figgins has reportedly drawn interest from both Chicago teams, in addition to the previously reported Mets and Phillies. The White Sox say they’re too poor to get Figgins, and after acquiring Alex Rios and Jake Peavy that seems possible. They also just acquired Mark Teahen to play third, and will move Gordon Beckham to second, so they’d have to play Figgins in left field, where he is less valuable.

It would appear that the LAA’s will not be resigning Chone Figgins or John Lackey. If that is the case, they should seriously consider not signing Vlady as well. Kendrick, in my opinion should be groomed for 3rd base, where he appears best suited.
They should use the money to bolster their pitching staff. They should try for a blockbuster trade with either SF (Lincecum or Cain) or KC (Greinke) and trade Mathews, Wood and a couple of pitchers in the deal.
For left field, Damon is a better fit than Granderson and won’t cost them an arm and a leg.

  • The Angels are talking that way because they don’t want to act desperate. Fact is, they’d love to have Holliday but they don’t want to be used by Boras the way they were with Teixeira. I believe them when they say they’re focused on Lackey and Figgins. However, Reagins said we’re not going there “yet.” This means, he’s plan B or Plan A but they’re taking a different approach. The market will unfold very quickly for Lackey and when it appears over-priced, the Angels will look elsewhere.

No chance in hell will SF let Lincecum or Cain go. Also, if you sign Damon, you better not give up an arm because he certainly doesn’t have one!

Can we just get in a player or two who can give an interview in English after a game? I know that sounds ethnically/culturally biased and all, but after 10 years in the majors, shouldn’t you be able to interview in the language of the place you work? Although that might cost the worst announcer in baseball — Jose Mota — his job.

James don’t you have a KKK meeting to go to or better yet a Tea Party. So following your logic, the Angels should ignore 65% of the planet and sign only English speakers. Maybe when they’ve gotten rid of all the Latins, they can then rid themselves of all the black players too. Would that make you feel more at home. By the way, you realize this is the Los Angeles Angels right, and not the Alabama Angels.

Anyone who ever thinks about wanting Damon in Anaheim should consider 2 things; first he has the arm of a minimum inning 12 year old and second, read Joe Torre’s book. After reading the book I look at Damon like Ricky Williams. Not that he would rather smoke weed than play baseball, but Johnny has a tendancy of wnating to quit playing baseball from time to time. Lackey should be signed period. Our offense is not a problem. Everyone points to the lack of power the Angels have but they were in the upper echelon of offensive teams this season. Like with Ervin and Saunders, our pitching staff can fall apart. Keep the known quantity. Since John gained control of his emotions he has been an amazingly consistant pitcher and can dominate. I know he has started the past two seasons with injuries but nothing major.
