No more Physioc, Hudler

November 24th, 2009, 12:12 pm · 453 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

Fox Sports West announced that Angels announcers Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc will not be part of the Angels’ broadcast team next season.  The LA Times has the press release:

“We are going in a different direction next season and will use single announcing teams on TV and radio that will include Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza on Fox Sports West and KCOP and Terry Smith and Jose Mota calling the action on radio (KLAA AM 830). We believe this approach will create greater consistency on our telecasts, as well as a deeper familiarity with fans and viewers.”

RELATED STORY: Angels fans will miss Hudler

So are you guys happy, sad, indifferent?

Was this the right decision?

I am glad for the move but a little bit sad for Hudler. While he can be annoying, especially when partnered with Physioc, I kind of wish he could have been given a better exit.

    • I’m a Big Angel Fan and loved Listening to both Hud & Physioc. They brought Smile’s and Happiness to alot of people, we will miss you !!

      • F A Jackson says:

so do the Special Olympics, doesn’t mean they are good…

        • happyhbmom says:

Wow, someone’s gonna be hurtin’ when his karma catches up to him!

          • F A Jackson says:

What is wrong with this statement? Tell me. I am simply saying the Special Olympics bring a smile and happiness to a lot of people, the level at which they compete is not the best, but that’s not what it is about. It’s about them getting the opportunity to enjoy competition amongst peers like everyone else. Somebody gave Physioc and Hudler the opportunity but they aren’t very good, this is why the change has been made.

            • jkanaheim says:

wait… im confused?? so this comment/topic is about special olympics?

            • kimo31 says:

F A Jackson - Apparently you have never attended the Special Olympics or a Challenger Division Little League Baseball game because if you had you would know that they CAN and DO compete at a very high level especially considering the physical and developmental hurdles that they have to overcome. I challenge you to attend the Special Olympics or a Challenger game and THEN tell me that they don’t compete at a high level. I’ve see it with my own eyes and I would appreciate it if you would OPEN yours!

              • Maria says:

FA J is just sore because he/she came in last in the SO competion he/she was entered in.

              • F A Jackson says:

“especially considering the physical and developmental hurdles that they have to overcome”

This is exactly what I am saying, they are limited to what they can do which makes what they do not very good compared to people without limitations. Let me break it down for your feeble mind, why do the Lakers sell out Staples Center every night and the Sparks only get 8,000 people? Because the level at which they play the game is not the best. People who watch basketball want to see the best players in the world hence Staples Center selling out when the Lakers play. Can Special Olympics participants compete in the Olympics? No they cannot, they are limited and therefore are not good enough. It’s ok that they aren’t, I am not either. I’m sorry that you are unable to grasp the real point here. I am in no way saying the Special Olympics aren’t great, simply saying the level of play is not the greatest.

The point is, Rex and Physioc were not the best at what they do and although they may bring you enjoyment the network feels they are not the best product they can provide as a broadcasting team. NOT GOOD ENOUGH…

                • Dan Reese says:

This is short and to the point… This is a BIG mistake. Let the people that watch and listen decide.

                  • F A Jackson says:

Yeah, that’s a good idea. The people know everything. Good lord man.

                    • J-Dizzle says:

While Steve was a bit boring at times, Rex was great and by no means a special olympics equivalent as you so seem to believe he is. Definitely much better then the 2 that are going full time now. I loved how Rex broke down the little things about the game, all the different terms players would use, breaking down how certain pitches were thrown, overall giving a feel of what it is like playing on the field as if you were there. His enthusiasm and unique voice brought life to a game that sees many long gaps between pitches and plays. The 2 guys out there now don’t bring that. They bring that corporate network bland style. Rex’s job was color commentary in a sense and he brought a lot of color and painted a beautiful picture of the game every game.

                    • just_sayin says:

                      F A didn’t compare them to the Special Olympics…

                    • sunnydelight says:

In light of Rex’s son being a Special Needs boy, it is in poor taste that FA brings up the Special Olympics comparrison. Rex has done so much to raise awareness of the Special Olympics, and special programs in Little League and AYSO. For that he should be Knighted.
He is a giver and one could argue, a saint! Fox’s decision hurts these causes (unintentionally).

                    • sunnydelight says:

YOu’ve obviously labeled yourself as Mr. Discernment. You probably love Vin (snore, nap) Scully, and worship Joe Pa.

                • kimo31 says:

IMO you are the one with the “feeble mind” since you have apparently NEVER attended the Special Olympics or a Challenger Division Little League Baseball game so you are making a huge assumption about the level of competition that you would see there.
IF you ever decide to go out and see for yourself I am sure that you will be surprised to see that these athletes compete at a very high level.
And it is your OPINION that Rex and Steve are “not the best at what they do” and so what if that is true?
Are we only supposed to accept “the best” at everything?!
I am sure there are some players on the Angels that are not “the best” at what they do!
So are you saying that Rory and Mark are “the best”?!
From reading the posts on this website it seems apparent that your OPINION of Rex and Steve is in the minority for a variety of reasons but I’m sure that your “feeble mind” can’t grasp that!

                  • F A Jackson says:

You are lost on the whole Special Olympics thing so forget it.

This is America we demand the best, always have always will. If it isn’t the best, we move on.

All the Angels players are the best at what they do, that is why they are in the Major Leagues.

I never said that Rory and Mark are the best, but they are certainly the best of the group. This is a Major League team and we deserve a Major League broadcast, obviously Fox and the Angels feel that Steve and Rex are not that.

                    • kimo31 says:

No, apparently you are lost since you seem to be ignorant of the fact that Rex Hudler has a child with Down’s Syndrome who participates in the Challenger Division of Little League. So when you first posted your comparison of Rex to the Special Olympics you touched a nerve with me and nothing you have posted since has demonstrated any understanding of Special Olympians or Challenger athletes.
And by the way, Special Olympians ARE the “best” at what they do and if you ever attend the Special Olympics I am sure even you will see that.
As for Rex and Steve, it is apparent that Angel Fans have passionate opinions about this change and IMO that is better than having a fan base who could care less about any changes to the franchise.

                    • F A Jackson says:

“comparison of Rex to the Special Olympics”

I never did that. Read the post. It said, “They brought Smile’s and Happiness to alot of people”, I said, “So do the Special Olympics, doesn’t mean they are good…” I in no way shape or form said Rex and Steve in the booth was like the Special Olympics. I said they are not good.

                    • F A Jackson says:

“And by the way, Special Olympians ARE the “best” at what they do and if you ever attend the Special Olympics I am sure even you will see that.”

In comparison to the athletes competing in their respective sports, yes they are the best. Generally speaking, they are not the best. Sorry.

                    • kimo31 says:

By responding to the post about Rex and Steve bringing smiles and happiness to people with your comment that “So do the Special Olympics” you were making a comparison whether you intended to or not. A poor choice by you but that is OK because IMO that just makes you just like FSW.

      • Robert Grebner says:

I have been an Angels fan since 1961, when a Tucson radio station began carrying their games. Steve and Rex have been arguably the best duo since the great days of Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale. Shame on you, Artie for letting them go.

      • Bart Hollander says:

It’s ridiculous that Fox Sports can determine who are the voices and personalities that represent the Angels. There was no truer, entertaining and dedicated Angel than Rex and Steve was an absolute professional. Arte should do the right thing and reinstate them.

      • Norma Conner says:

We are also big fans of both Hud and Physioc. They made the game interesting and I also learned a lot about the game from them. I learned nothing from Markas and Gubicza. I hated to listen to them because they were so boring. Gubicza was a pitcher for another team not even the Angels he had no clue about the rest of the team only a pitcher’s stand point. I liked to hear How excited Hud got when they hit a home run and how the regular team members were thinking.
I’m almost in tears because watching the Angel Games is one of my only entertainment but no Hud and Physioc it will never be the same.
Gubicza is no good, he is stupid and I can’t stand him. I’m sad

      • DOUG HEALEY says:

HUD WAS EXCITING AND ENTHEUSIASTIC. HE MADE ME LAUGH. HE MADE FIZ LAUGH. THEY GAVE ME A BREAK FROM ALL THE DULLNESS OF BASEBALL. STATS… STATS. THEY DID THAT IN A CALIFORNIA KINDA WAY. BEST OF LUCK GUYS.

      • Bob Murray says:

I loved Hud with his spirit, knowledge and being a Homer was best of all. Now we will have a ho hum duo of probably nice guys. A bad decision. Maybe the Brady Bunch re-runs won’t be too bad. But wait we keep Jose Motto who I can not understand, way to go morons….

      • john hoyt says:

I have been a listener or watcher of the Angels since 1961. Baseball is fairly boring, but colorful broadcasters such as Hud and Phys can make it interesting during the dull times. As for markas and Gubisza, they are dull and have NO color in their announcing. Seconds pass and they remain silent with nothing to say. I am sorry to see this questionable change, but then I am only one listener. SIncerely ,John Hoyt

    • Jim says:

They are all bad, including and especially gubs and roars. At least with hud and phys you had some character. Now it is just boring fools who are slow with facts and dont have any interesting stories. Come on gub we get that you have man love for Dean Chance, get over it.

      BAD move!!!

      • F A Jackson says:

Hudler had interesting stories? Stories about him riding the pine for his whole career? No thanks, I would rather listen to a 2 time All Star and World Series winner.

        • Randy says:

First off, he didn;t ride the pice his whole career…not even close…check your facts. Second, Hud never had a world series game or opportunity to compete in. That fact is 100% irrelevant anyway. Iw ould rather listen to the guy who has baseball insight, knowledgable, and entertaining, regardless of when or where he played.

Guby is a nice guy…but that’s it. He’s boring. He is monotonic. He is not the right man for this job.

          • Randy says:

dammit my typing sucks. I meant to say “pine”, not pice.

          • F A Jackson says:

He didn’t ride the pine? Hudler had 300 plate appearances only once in his illustrious 14 year career. Go and check your facts bud.

            • J-Dizzle says:

A 2 time all star and world series winner who is dry and stale and cant work a mic to save his life? Commentary should be about bringing the game to the viewers and bringing color and life to the game through their voices. Having the ability to sell the game. Rex may not have gotten a large number of at bats or won a World Series, but he was in the league for 14 years and that’s a loooong time to be around. He’s got a great voice and has been around the league and I’m sure during that learned quite a bit. More in fact then any of us will ever know. Many of the big name stars out there don’t have the personality to entertain on the mic.

              • F A Jackson says:

Then why did Fox fire him? Because he doesn’t make the cut… He is a rah rah guy that doesn’t offer up much more than that.

                • J-Dizzle says:

I’m a democrat, I can come up with plenty of reasons when it comes to Fox.

                  • J-Dizzle says:

And yes, I know this is baseball and it’s not political, but it’s still Fox and if something doesn’t fit within their skewed vision of how things should be to them, especially if it conflicts with their overall political views then hey.

                    • F A Jackson says:

                      It’s all a conspiracy I know…

                    • daveX says:

OK, I was going to let it go, but I’m sick of this right-wing conspiracy bs about fox SPORTS. That’s right, it’s not Fox News, or the Fox Network. These are run by different entities. Do you even watch the programming on Fox network? Not very right wing IMO–in fact most are just the opposite and seem to be going more left to prove they’re not like Fox News. So let it go, this not political at all!

                    • LetsGoMets says:

                      Juuuuust a bit of a stretch here…

                    • J-Dizzle says:

                      Shhhhh it’s ok Dave.

                • jordan says:

OK Hud made a mistake in the airport and Fox can’t live with that.

          • Larry K says:

Letting Physioc and Hud go is a real downer. Sometimes when Markas and Gubby were the ones broadcasting on TV, we would turn them down and turn on the radio because Hudler made the game so much more interesting. Hud revealed so much about the eccentricities of the game that I wished I would have known when I played in High School, that I would have been a much better player because of it. He really knows the game and conveys it masterfully. He makes it so you really enjoy not only watching it but thinking about what you are watching. The ones we are being left with will be taking a lot of enjoyment out of the experience. After all it is entertainment we are watching for entertainment purposes, not something to just keep your eyes busy. BIG MISTAKE, Mr. Moreno.

            • Nick says:

I totally agree with you! Guby and Rory are okay (Rory is better on the radio) although Guby is BORING. We do the same thing because Hud and Phys are the best! As much as I love the Angels I wil end up reading about the games in The Register and not on TV or the radio. Sorry, Smith and Mota is NOT a good team either!

    • BRINGBACKHUD says:

Did the Angels do their homework on this one? Wow what a bad decision. I encourage everyone who has an opinion on this to seek out Rex’s auto-bio book “Splinters” to really see the interesting, entertaining yet difficult road he took to get to where he is today. I know Rex will persevere as he always has. Boy I hope this wasn’t a money decision. Over the next few months, I think we also might be questioning the Angel’s moves on the field as well.

    • Sara Gordon says:

C’mon!!! How can you keep Mota and get rid of Hud and Phys? I wish Arte would take into account the listeners before he makes these moves. I love listening to Phys and Hud. They aren’t perfect but they are entertaining. I would rather chew crushed glass than ever again listen to a game butchered by Jose Mota.

    • Sean says:

They should have stayed with Hudler and lost either Rory or Terry or both who are terrible and not very knowledgable.
You will remember Hudler but the other 2 are easy to forget.

    • Voicedude says:

Rex Hudler is part of the Heart & Soul of the Angels.

Getting rid of him is the SECOND biggest mistake made by the front office - the biggest being changing the name to ‘Los Angeles Angels’ (which, in Spanish, is redundant!).

Let’s hope the fan outcry is just as loud, as the front office’s excuses would be even weaker than they were on the name change….

      SAVE THE WONDER DOG!!!

      • Shannon Wegener says:

My family and myself are in total agreement with the fact that this is the Second biggest mistake [Los Angeles Angels being the first] the Angel management has made. Hud & Phys were refresing, harmonious in that they complimented each other, informative without over doing it, and most of all ENTHUSIASTIC. Most of the commentator duos are as dull as dishwater, especiallty during the playoffs and World Series. They put me to sleep . . . but Hud & Phys leave me anticipating what they will say and do next. I prefer them over all other combinations whether it is on TV or radio and I listen to both. I am becoming a very disallusioned fan [almost 40 years] with the ticket prices forcing us to give up our box seats, popcorn ban, name change, and now our favorite broadcasters gone. Maybe we will be gone in the near future, too!

        • J-Dizzle says:

Los Angeles is a mistake? Considering their constant rise in attendance, the extra money from media marketing deals and all, I’d say it was a smart business decision. I could care less what location name they use. They could call them the Orange County Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California of the United States of North America for all I care. They’re still my Angels and if they’re winning games and they are pulling the resources to get and pay the players that make us a winning team year after year then by all means I’m for it. A real Angels fan would feel the same way.

        • mizjeanne says:

What gripes me is that they won’t even get to call the “All Star” game. What a rook! I wish them well. They were very complimentary to each other. The duo will be missed by me. I may have to watch the game without sound. Gubby bugs.

    • Sherri Healey says:

THANKS FOR RUNNING MY DAY FOX. IT WONT BE THE SAME. DODGERS ARE LOOKING BETTER EVERYDAY. IT’S ALMOST LIKE FIRING VIN. IDIOTS!!!!!

    • joe randle says:

i work shiftwork so i listen to about 100 games on the radio. hud and physioc are two most talented broadcasters the angels have by far!

    • ronnie says:

Say it ain’t so, Steve and Rex are the voice of the Angel’s , and one of the main reasons for angel fever in So. Cal. Mark is good and Rory is fair but it won’t be the same.

    • LA Guy says:

Hudler is the best advocate the team has. He’s fun and entertaining in a long season. Does anyone really believe that Jose Mote and Terry Smith are more entertaining? Often you can’t understand Mota and the guy is so serious. I don’t need to have the hit and run explained to me for 8,000th time during game 158 of the season. Hudler is knowledgeable and charismatic. It was Physioc that struggles with the game and political correctness. At times Fiz sounds and looks like a snapshot form the 1950s. Terrible decision. Gubicza and Markas laugh and joke throughout every broadcast and it’s great fun as well. This is the result of old cranks complaining that Hudler is a clown. Apparently there’s no laughing in baseball. What other guy comes out of the broadcast booth to sign autographs during the game? I think we’ve collectively lost our sense of humor. Boo Angels!

    • Richard says:

I am sorry, but to a true baseball fan they sucked…period….Hud was okay for about 2 years, but after that I was tired of being talked to like I was a 10 year old…Physioc just was a homer…

      • LA Guy says:

You’re a pure baseball fan? Enjoy the constant clinic that is Jose Mota. No jokes and no smiling allowed. A pure baseball fan knows the game and doesn’t need Hudler to explain every nuance, you know them already. Have you ever listened to other team’s broadcasters? You’d be hard pressed not to find a homer. Hard to eat and sleep baseball with the team and management, traveling the country with the same guys on buses and planes and not root for them. Dick Enberg wasn’t a homer for the Angels? Chick Hearn wasn’t a homer for the Lakers? Bob Miller isn’t a homer for the Kings? You’re right Richard, you are true baseball fan, if by fan you mean some old grumpy dude complaining about the good old days. Lighten up and get yourself some Hud dog.

    • jim says:

You are as uniformed as both these morons. Phys was bad enough by himself. teamed with hud they were the worst teamin the history of broadcasting

  • TheJekyl says:

Sad … I have enjoyed Rex’s insight and thought him and Steve made a great pairing. Won’t be the same …

    • Jake Logan says:

Rex’s insight? Insight in to what. He knew absolutely nothing about the game of baseball. I was embarassed and shocked at how little baseball knowledge he actually had. And partnered with Phys, they had absolutely no chemistry together. While both may be truly nice guys, that doesn’t give them the right to suck year after year. Yes, I said suck, because it was truly painful to listen to them together. While Rory and Gubby, are not Scully or even Enberg at least they have some chemistry together.

      • Arky says:

Just wondering where you learned your baseball?

      • Bryan Martindale says:

You’re entitled to your opinion, but how dare you say that Rex didn’t know baseball! Ask anyone he played with about his baseball knowledge.

      • LA Guy says:

What kind of insight are you looking for? Hit and run? Run and hit? Wild pitch? Hudler told fun stories and was locked in the game and was often interrupted by Physioc and some inane comment or question. Physioc was an anchor around Hudler’s neck. This is supposed to be entertainment, not education. With 162 games I think we get plenty of details of the game itself. Pre-game infor, post game stats, radio talk, the newspaper… what did you want the man to give you that you’re not getting seven days a week?

      • Craig says:

Jake you must like ‘B’ movies over an ‘A’ movie also. Because Rory & Gubby are definitely the ‘B’ team and the only thing that stopped them from being the ‘D’ team is that there were only two announcing teams. And Fox & the Angels went with ‘Vanilla’ and a crew that has to push hard to just be vanilla!

  • Anthony says:

Bummed for both. Know I’m in the minority but I never had an issue with either.

    • mizjeanne says:

That was exactly the word I used. I was bummed. When I woke up this morning my hubby had to break it to me gently. He said,”I have got bad news” My mind raced. I couldn’t imagine what was coming next. He told me about Rex and Fiz. I couldn’t imagine what the network and Mr.Moreno were thinking. All last season I just tolerated Gubby and Markus. Enough with the Dean Chance comments. The first few times it was cute, but then it got boring. Gubby may get the hang of it but I will miss my boys. I don’t think Rex ever showed that he had a bad day. He was always so excited to be a part of baseball. All with a smile and a cute story. My hubby works at Angel stadium as a parking cashier. For my grandsons birthday Rex stopped and took the time to give my hubby a signed baseball card.Quite a thoughtful guy. He and Fiz were a perfect pair.

  • Anthony says:

Might Rex still do pre and post game coverage? Just wondering…

    • bpsqwerty says:

hopefully. it seems to suit him well.

    • F A Jackson says:

Yeah, I loved it when he did the starting lineups, how long did that take? 30 minutes?

    • Jake Logan says:

Maybe they can dress Rex up like the rally monkey and let him run around the stadium acting like an idiot. That’s basically what he did anyway

      • mizjeanne says:

Come on be fair. I saw times when he saw a sign from a fan and he would run down to the stands and sit and talk with them. Often he would sign baseball cards or programs all in the name of promoting baseball. He was a good sport. He will be missed but I guess not by you. I get it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Not everyone has the same sense of humor.

  • CosmicQueso says:

Fantastic news! Markas and Gooby can actually deliver some insight on the game instead of worthless anecdotes on what a great guy player X is or how he “plays the game the right way”. It also gets Jose Mota off my tv which is an additional plus. Terry Smith is still an A rate radio guy too so all-around solid moves.

    Now get us a pitcher!

  • “… greater consistency on our telecasts …”

Well, who were the geniuses who created the inconsistency in the first place? The guys above Rex and Phys who decided to lard us down with extra broadcasters, rotating them in and out, swapping partnerships because they thought it would keep the broadcasts “fresh.”

The Angels had it right when it was Rex and Phys on TV, Rory and Terry on the radio. But that was in Disney days. Read into that what you will.

    • Dakari says:

Couldn’t of said it better Stephen. I have been a Angel fan since before they had many….back in 1968. Obviously I grew up with Enberg, and for me he still will be the Angel announcer I always go back too. But over the years I try to focus on the best of them, and they each have their good and bad qualities….like the rest of us. But my wife and I are very sad about this and will start trying to figure out a way to not listen…just watch. But for me, I would trade Phys and Rex for Jose and Billy Mac….I just can’t stomach them anymore specially without being balanced out by Phys and Rex. Here’s hoping there is a ground swell to bring them back and right this wrong.

      • Well, that’s just it. We’ll watch even if they use two trained chimps as the broadcasters. We’d just turn down the audio. Doesn’t matter to the TV station, because the ratings are the same whether the sound is turned up or down.

People are passionate about their Angels, but most people forget that from ownership’s perspective this is a business. The purpose of business is to separate a customer from his money. That’s all we are to ownership. Marks.

    • Don McHale says:

I totally agree with you. I like the fresh broadcasts except when Mota is in the mix.
I’m surprised they kept Mota. While he’s great at interviewing and knows the game very well, he is terrible at calling games and being a color guy in English. He says the same phrases over and over again… like “sky high” and “he skies it”

Rex says interesting and funny things ALL the time. Plus he has so much exuberence for the game, its hard to listen to him and not feel good. Terry is the best. Rory is awesome too. Gooby gets into the pitchers mind and predicts pitches very well. Im going to try to wake up and call AM 830 because i wanna talk trash on this a lot. I can do without Physioc because he gets too excited when the other team hits home runs, he’d be great at a national broadcast though.

  • Nick says:

Rex Hudler and Steve Psysioc have a great fan base and they are very consistent. This is a cheap shot against the fans. This move further alienates some of the fans who love the chemistry these two share. Rory and Guby are somewhat annoying and Jose Mota, who is a great guy is annoying because it is difficult to understand everything he says. I’ts really a shame that Artie would do this to the fans …. no one is perfect. Yes, Rex can be a little annoying, but haw can you NOT love someone with the kind of positive attitude and love of baseball and love of the Angels that Rex has! His enthusiasm is contagious!

    • Paul says:

Could not have said this better - I would only add that GUBY the Goober is so mumble mouth that he should be on a cartoon. The professions (and probably higher paid) are now gone, leaving us with scraps.

      • Nick says:

The fact that Guby is hard to understand and is boring is true. Guby needs to get some ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM, and he needs to ENNUNCIATE!

        Bad move, Mr. Moreno!

    • jordan says:

Nick - you said it well. The Hudster is kind of a piece of Americana. It’s like firing The Beach Boys in their prime!

    • GRK says:

      Nick,

Artie had nothing to do with this. FSN fired Hudler and Psysioc. BTW, have you figured out how Artie can generate the extra $8Mil a year he gets from advertising as LAA without raising ticket/parking /food/beverage prices? If so, let him know and you can have your Anaheim Angels name back!

      • kimo31 says:

GRK - Please post the link to Arte’s claim that LAA is responsible for an extra $8Mil a year from advertising since everything I’ve read has him stating that the impact could NOT be quantified!
As for this move, FSW created the inconsistency and now they apparently decided to flip a coin and Steve and Rex lost out. Rex WILL be missed as his PASSION for the game of baseball IMO has been sorely lacking in the Angel’s broadcast booth since the days of Enberg and Drysdale!

        • Jake Logan says:

There’s 40,000 people who come to the stadium every night who have passion about the game. That doesn’t give them the right to announce the games. Just because Rex kisses the ass of every player on both teams doens’t make him capable, it just makes him an ass-kisser. When did you ever hear Rex criticize one player or one play. It was pathetic. Vladdy and GA spent 6 years jogging to first on ground balls, ever hear Rex the Wonder Butt Kisser point that out. God no, then maybe Vlad and GA wouldn’t play golf with him on the road. Say what you want about Gubby, but at least he’ll criticize poor play.

          • J-Dizzle says:

So, in order to be a good color commentator you need to be critical of the game? One thing I loved about Rex was his constant ability to bring optimism. The Angels could be playing horribly and be down 10 and he still had a way of making you feel like they could come back this inning and win the game. He sold the game. He made you want to leave the t.v. on and watch, to keep viewership. The other guys make me want to mute my t.v. and listen to something else.

            • LetsGoMets says:

“One thing I loved about Rex was his constant ability to bring optimism.”

I will say this. I hate people who are ALWAYS optimistic, but for some reason, Rex Hudler didn’t bother me at all as a broadcaster.

              • J-Dizzle says:

Some people can be optimistic to a fault and that can be annoying. But when you’re doing commentary for a team, in order to keep the fans glued and keep the ratings up, you need to bring that sense of hope, like the team can come back and win it all anyway. You have to keep that interest and try to ease the pessimism of the fan, to keep them from changing the channel or turning off the t.v. He did his job well.

                • LetsGoMets says:

Sure, but there are plenty of announcers who play the “homer” role to the hilt, and they’re super annoying as a result. Rich Waltz of the Florida Marlins comes to mind.

For reasons I cannot explain, Rex Hudler didn’t rub me the wrong way (although it’s quite understandable why others feel differently). I think I’d chalk it up to a certain inexplicable charisma that he had which allowed him to get away with that cheerleading style of announcing.

    • Well said…..I’m sure it is a money issue with Artie!!!

    • jkanaheim says:

i agree! rory and guby on air often forget the mic is on and talk about random things that arent very inetersting…its a sad day to be an angel fan p.s drop LA.

  • Becka says:

Whether Rex Huddler is a good broadcaster or not he is very entertaining and I think the broadcasts are going to be lacking without him.

    • OC4truth says:

I agree. I enjoyed Rex’s enthusiasm. He made games fun. Rory or one of them seems more negative as they are at bat or whatever, not holding the good thoughts.

Of course I haven’t been able to watch much since only have local channels now and they aren’t on those very much.

  • Papagorgio says:

Losing Rex is awful. Phsyioc should get a gig with the Yes Network.

  • Ayero says:

Thank you Fox Sports! Christmas has come early… Pawtucket or Scranton will be perfect for Physihack.

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

Why is it ”difficult to understand everything” Jose Mota says?

I personally appreciate the fact he pronounces players’ names correctly, which is extremely educational..

  • Garrett says:

I totally disagree my whole family thinks its the wrong move he bought a lot of action and fun to the team on tv. KEEP him taking him off will lower telacast not increase him

  • Arte H8s Anaheim says:

Jose Mota is simply awful. He has a speech impediment that goes beyond an accent and pronouncing the native latin names. He should not be in broadcasting whether it is radio, television, or an internet blog.

    • Mike says:

I am glad someone else pointed out Jose Mota’s obvious flaws as a broadcaster. It is very difficult to listen to the constant mispronunciation of names and strange inflections that don’t match the situation. He needs some serious voice coaching before ever getting in front of a microphone again. I expect better for the LA market.

As for the others, I think the Angels are making a big mistake letting Hud go. His inside info and fun loving approach are unique to the current talent lineup and will be missed. Phys is great but can be replaced as he is a Play by Play guy. I’m sure he won’t have difficulty finding other baseball work.

As for my vote on lineup: please pair Rory and Terry back together again. They are the best, especially when together.

      Go Angels 2010!

  • OC Radical says:

They are much much better than Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza

  • jeff BOSLEY says:

FOX MAKING A MAJOR MISTAKE, WILL BE WATCHING WITH THE MUTE BUTTON ON. THEY MADE A SUPERB BROADCAST TEAM. I LIVE ON THE EAST COAST AND THEY MADE MY SHORT NIGHTS SO ENJOYABLE, DEFINITLEY WORTH STAYING UP FOR.

  • PC says:

That’s great, now Rex and that stupid baseball that he fondles the whole game can go somewhere else. Arte, now that the small stuff is done, how about getting Figgins and Lackey signed.

  • zfelix says:

whoever said to keep Physoic and get rid of Hud, knows nothing about baseball!…..This is really stupid.

  • Arte H8s Anaheim says:

Rex gave a “home town” identity to the Angels which was and will be needed. Sorry to see him caned. Although he could be sometimes a bit too much, what great broadcaster isn’t a bit too much at times if you are truly a fan and watch them all the time. Gooby improved over time but he is not one of the great analyst of all times. He comes across as if he was in the “slow group” in grades k-12—forget college. Rory Markus has a voice and looks made for radio. Terry Smith is great on radio and should stay. I will, however, miss Steve Phsyioc updating the total pitch count after every pitch for innings 1 through 9.

  • Neil says:

Ya…I’m sure the people who are upset about this move won’t be so upset when or if Arte get’s Halladay on board………Way to go Halos, this CHANGE is the ONLY CHANGE I agree with the past year !!

    Love Gubbee and Markas!

    Go HALOS!

    • Ayero says:

Yeah, these are the same people who cheer for Reggie Willits…

      • J-Dizzle says:

It’s fun to root for the little guy and wish him big. It’s common for most fans in any league and on any team. Example, in basketball the Lakers, fans cheer big for DJ Mbenga and Adam Morrison. Last year it was Coby Karl. It’s an underdog thing.

  • Jack Hans says:

Getting Rid of the Wonder Dog? This is insane. Rex was one of the greatest inspirational Angel fans out there! All we get out of the pair are two dudes who love to talk about themselves and the latest silly jokes. The season just got a whole lot worse for me. Markas and Gooby are like a couple of kids at times. This is a major step backwards Fox!

    • Jack Hans says:

      It should have read…

…All we get out of the OTHER pair are two dudes who love to talk about themselves…

      Sorry.
      Jack Hans

      • HallaDay says:

Well said Jack. This is a dark day for Angel fans.

        • F A Jackson says:

Oh for pete’s sake, you act like they fired Vin Scully or Chick Hearn. IT’S REX HUDLER!!!

          • J-Dizzle says:

Your point? Just because you weren’t entertained by him doesn’t mean that the rest of us should suffer. Rex was better then most any I’ve heard in baseball or some other sports out there. He doesn’t have that dry bland corporate feel.

            • F A Jackson says:

The point is he is expendable, he isn’t as good as you think he is… Unfortunately for you bud, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are as corporate as it gets. Get used to it, it is here to stay and I couldn’t be happier, I love watching them in the playoffs every year.

      • Jake Logan says:

If Rex is so great, then I’m sure the other franchises will be lining up to hire him. LMAO yeah right. He’ll be dressed up like the rally monkey, signing autographs in the parking lot of the Big A to make a living. The guy was absolutely terrible and the fact that no other team will hire him will prove it.

        • bigangelfan says:

i agree wilth jake logan on the hudler firilng, it was late , very late in coming. the guy was the worst, and i just have to say one thing which covers his style; bigmouth.

  • flipchik says:

Yeah! Rex and Steve were always talking about themselves and never about the game or the players in great detail that an announcer in their capacity should.

  • stupidpeople says:

should have got rid of hudler along time ago - what a role model - remember he got busted with pot at I think an airport…..losssser. They should get rid of Mota too………can’t speak very well. i hate watching the games he announces—–its like fingernails scratching a chaulkboard.

    • zfelix says:

who cares if he smokes pot!

    • J-Dizzle says:

Ummm, did you know that California is well on its way to legalizing marijuana? Hell I’ve been around many many pot smokers. I also live with an alcoholic. The pot smokers aren’t verbally emotionally abusive, let alone aren’t as inconsiderate, rude, and incontinent even. The worst thing you can bump into with a pot smoker is that they get the munchies and probably end up eating too much as a result.

  • Rawlorollin says:

Steve P. call’s Pac-10 Fox Sports College basketball and football games, he’s all good. Hudler, i think he’s gonna get a gig selling weed now but hey , Good Luck Wonder dog!! We’ll miss ya!

I could care less who call’s the games as long as they WIN !!!

    Go Angels!!!!

  • Sean says:

We could hire Vin Scully and everyone can take a nap during the games…

    • Gary Warner says:

The best thing about the Dodgers in the playoffs was being able to turn off the TV sound and listen to Vin spin. But then I grew up on baseball that didn’t need wrap-around flashing signs on the upper deck and personal soundtracks for every player who comes into the game. My idea of paradise was listening to Vin Scully on the radio call a spring training game at Vero Beach.

  • John says:

    How about Dick Enberg?

  • mikeg says:

I’m bummed by this move. I’m ambivalent about Physioc but I think Hudler was great - enthusiastic, came up with nicknames that stuck over time.

More J. Mota is a mistake in my opinion. He butchers the english language in ways that make what he says incomprehensible. And I also find that he’ll talk for minutes at a time and when he’s done I’m left wondering what he said.

Gubicza is excellent as are Terry and Rory.

  • GN says:

    This Sucks !
I enjoyed watching & listening to HUD .

Jack Hans has it 100% correct.

    FOX YOU SUCK.

  • hawk-e-puck says:

It’s about time!!!! While Hudler is a great rah-rah guy, we don’t need cheerleaders calling the game. And for a guy who played 20 years of pro ball, he sure made a lot of mistakes involving rules and calls while in the booth. Physioc is just a tool. He might as well have “Binford” stamped on his forehead. How many times during the season would he lose track of the count, or who the hitter was, or who was on base, or how many outs there were, etc, etc. And to top it off, on every pre-game intro, he made sure to hold that mic up high, showing off his World Series ring….like he was actually a part of the team and earned it. What a joke. While it’s a great jesture for the team to give rings to the support staff, those rings should be give to the players who earned them on the field. This was a long overdue move.

  • agarcia says:

im glad they sucked, the 2 of them couldnt get it done. worst announcers ever.

  • Gentwelve says:

Letting go of Hud was kinda BS, he added some fun and was cool. HIs Billy Idol costume on 80’s retro night was classic! He went down into the stands one night and gave an autograph to a kid that was holding a sign. I’m mean that’s being real…..

Physioc was a couple IQ points above a baked potato. I’m surprised he lasted this long!

  • Jeff W says:

Plenty of room at Dodger nation and listen to the dean of all anouncers. Vin Scully. Go Blue!!

  • Shea says:

Very unfortunate that they had to let Hudler go. Always thought he made the games enjoyable and am going to miss his energy.

  • Kelly says:

Very sad to see Hud go. Fox has ruined quite a few things for me, not surprised they ruined this too.

  • RSBuletz says:

The Steve & Rex show had grown stale. Seven years on and you could count on Steve to work “2002, that special year” somewhere into the broadcast.

I also think Hudler’s game was a little off the last two years. Maybe the competition with the other TV team had something to do with that.

Rory has always been a pro. Guby at the beginning of 2008 was just embarassing to listen to. His sentences would skip entire words, or he’d often flame out mid-sentence. Now he has learned the craft, and he and Rory have developed an enjoyable repartee.

  • RSBuletz says:

Maybe they can throw Rex the Wonder Dog a bone by putting him on the Sports Lodge full-time. Heaven knows that show can use some help.

    • AngryAngel says:

I couldn’t agree more. Hudler would make 830 quality. Lodge makes an awful show that is pretty much a class on what not to do on the radio.

  • Eddie says:

Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza are perfect…for my insomnia…thank you Arte, I can now fall asleep sooner listening to these guys. Rex was the last entertaining commentator left on TV - the days of Political Correctness has fully taken over - where everyone sounds the same and their is no more passion - bye Harry Carrey, bye Chick Hearn, bye for now Rex Hudler.

Does anyone think Rory is a bit pompous?

How could you not enjoy Rex screaming over Physioc when an Angel hit a deep fly ball, “Get Out!!!”

    • Ayero says:

You did not just put Rex Hudler in the same sentence as those two???

      • J-Dizzle says:

Much like the other 2, Rex was colorful. What made Harry and Chick great was their ability to bring color and life to the game. He may not be as great as the 2, but he went out and tried to bring just as much life to it. Then again, greats like those I’m sure made their share of mistakes and all early in their careers. We best remember them for their long careers and how great they were spanning those long years. Rex likely could have gotten better as time went on and from there, you never know.

  • lbc2oc says:

I’d rather keep Rex and get rid of Jose Mota. I can’t understand a word he is saying!

  • Mario F. says:

At last we can enjoy a game without being reminded about 20 times a game on how the Angels won the World Series back in 2002.

  • vgags says:

glad i don’t have to see rex holding that dam baseball in his hand during every postgame show.

    • J-Dizzle says:

Better that baseball then the vivid picture that the idiots now will try to paint with white paint and a white canvas in an all white room.

  • Jeff Powell says:

I am 52 and have been an Angel fan since 1968. I learned something new just about every time Hudler worked a game.
Jose Mota SUCKS. He may be the worst anouncer EVER. So much for me listening to the games on the radio when I am out.
The only thing Arte has done worse than this is putting LA in front the the Angels.
    What a disgrace!

    • Ayero says:

It’s really too bad the Angels have Arte as an owner, I want to go back to the days of winning 75 games every year… shame on you Arte for providing the city of Anaheim with a winner every year… you are worse than Jerry Buss, a plague on both your houses!

    • Jake Logan says:

What exactly did you learn from Rex? Please tell me. I’m dying to know. He knew less about the game than anyone whose ever been on the air. Half the things he said made absolutely no sense, and the other half were flat out wrong. For example, if I had a dollar for every time Rex said on a check swing, that his bat didn’t cross the plate, I’d be a millionaire. There is no such rule. The rule is did he attempt to hit the ball, but for 7 years I listened to that clown repeat that idiodicy and now half of OC believes that’s the rule. The analyst’s job is to teach the game. Rex was absolutely clueless.

      • Arky says:

        MAYBE YOUR WERE NOT LISTENING

        • J-Dizzle says:

I agree. He taught much of the terminology that would be used on the field by players, would teach different pitching grips and how to throw certain pitches. He’d talk about different players habits, pregame rituals, even the things that vets would make rookies do over the course of the season. He brought the game, the players and the dugout to the fans watching the game. Most color guys can’t do that.

  • Borrring! says:

Huge Angel fan and hardly ever miss a game, but even so, baseball can be slow and dull at times. Hud injected some humor (intentionally or not) into the boradcasts, spewed genuine enthusiasm, and Phys is an excellent play-by-play guy. I thought they balanced each other out well.
    Bad move.

  • BRETT says:

WOW. What a way to start the Christmas season. That sucks. I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll miss chatting with Rex on Tuesdays at Throwbacks. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious. Hopefully they both land jobs elsewhere. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES FELLAS. YOU’LL BE MISSED

  • Biggie says:

What a disgrace. They were the most enjoyable team in Baseball! They did indeed make watching the game entertaining and informative. I am blown away that they would even consider dropping this dynamic duo. Watching the games will never be the same.

    • John says:

I too will miss Hud. My first reation was you have to be kidding. Hud made the game entertaining even when the game was boring. Gubie is getting better but I always thought he was seconed team. As for Mota; he is about the most anoying anouncer I have heard for a long time. Sometimes he speaks the same name two different way’s in the same sentence. It can get on your nerves. Make up your mind man. Good Luck Hud; I see better times ahead. Your bring a sense of fun to the game and you made me smile. JK

  • John says:

This is awful news. I’m a big Hud and Phys fan. If consistency is what Fox wanted, they’ll surely get it with Markas and Gubicza…VANILLA broadcasts of every game.

  • Mark Nordebiggest n says:

I never understood why they mixed two broadcast teams in the first place. Rex & Phys were always the A team with our family and it was always a disappointment when they would have Rory & Mark fill in for them…. Rex was a natural color man and perfect partner for Steve, who I thought was one of the best play by play announcers in sports television … I’m a huge fan (over 30 years) and this is a big shock ! Very Disappointed …

    • Ayero says:

Damn, you must be related to Physioc if you think he is one of the best play by play announcers in sports television. Thank god you aren’t on the broadcasting Hall of Fame panel…

  • Mark says:

This is horrible. Hud and Phys are a great broadcasting team. The other announcers are fine, but Hud and Phys were exceptional and they will be dearly missed. Please bring them back, Fox Sports!

  • ingodwetrust says:

Another reason why I have a hard time being an Angel fan.

  • P. Z. says:

Was Hud caught smoking dope again?

  • JANE says:

It’s really too bad that America’s pastime is going by the way of Wall Street. Is it all about money and greed? Hud and Physioc added the human touch, inspiration and humour to Angels baseball. It’s not all about statistics and boring play calls. What a shame. I don’t think I have felt this bad for Angels Baseball since they let go Eckstein. Ironically, he went on to be the World Series MVP for St. Louis! Hud and Physioc - We’ll really miss you!

  • Shelley says:

I am disappointed that Rex and Steve have been let go. It is a mistake. I have been a longtime Angel fan and loved Rex and Steve together. I hope this is not a signe of things to come.

    • Ayero says:

A sign of things to come? The Angels are in the playoffs every year, they have had a chance to win the World Series more times since Arte Moreno has been the owner than the whole existence of the Angels! I think things are ok in Angels land Shelley. If you have been a long time Angels fan then you should know more than anyone that these are the glory days. Try being a Pirates fan for a while…

      • Laurie says:

Funny you should mention being a Pirates fan. I have been an Angels season seat holder for 11 years, an avid fan for over 30 years, but most of all, I am a die hard basball fan. . Last year I moved to Pittsburgh. I try to support the Pirates, but the biggest problem that Pirates fans have is that as soon as the fans get attached to a to a player, a coach, a sales rep, or a broadcaster, they are out the door. There is no consistancy in anything when it comes to the Pirates. Rex and Phys were consistant, enthusiastic, and most of all, they loved the Angels. That is what fans want and expect. I do not get to go to as many games now in Ca so I have to watch them on MLB TV. Often they are brodcast on both teams home channels, and I ALWAYS search out the one with Rex. Rory and Terry are great on the radio, Rex an Phys were what the majority of fans want to see, and as far as Gub and Jose, SNOORE!!! Bad move Fox!!!!

  • BRETT says:

While I like Mark and Rory I will agreee that their broadcasts are BORING!!!!
It was obvious once they added Gubi to the mix it was only a matter of time until Hudler was released. If you remember, he’s been on the chopping block for the past 3 seasons. Also, I can’t listen to Mota for more than 10 minutes let alone 3 hours. This is a huge BLUNDER

  • The Fonz says:

Smart move. Hud, while very enthusiastic, was the worst color commentator ever. Physioc is fake and not original. Together it was the most annoying broadcast in the world.

  • Andrea says:

Very bummed to hear about this. I really enjoyed Phys & Hud. I felt they were actual Angel fans compared to Gubi, who I’m pretty sure wishes he was announcing for another team.

  • SMAN says:

I got satellite radio last year and was able to confirm whatIi;ve always known. Phys, with his over dramatic calling of even the most mundane plays, is in the bottom echelon of big league announcers.

Hud, does not deserve to be on a play by play team. He’s like a lot of former players who got the gig just because he is a former player but doesn’t have the talent to convey the message to the listening public. He should probably be given a pre or post game slot so the fans who adore him, and there are many, can get their fix.

As for me, I spent the last season while driving listening to the other team’s announcers rather than putting up with Phys and Hud.

    This move was long overdue!

  • Dave says:

I guess I won’t be listening or watching Angel’s baseball next season. I’ll find something else to occupy my time.

  • Les Grossman says:

Hudler gave great insight into baseball. I’ll miss him.

  • mike says:

Why don’t they get rid of all them. Angels deserve the stature of someone like Vin Scully. Everyone is boring except for Hudler.

    • Bob says:

I really enjoyed Steve & Hud. When the Angels play the Dodgers it was nice to turn them on and turn off Vince Scully as he most of the time would be busy telling interesting stories and read from the tele prompter !!

    • WEHAVEVINNY! says:

Hey MIke FYI theres not too many Vin Scullys out on the streets. Theres loads of Hudlers and Phiz’s out there, …Only one Vinny ese..

  • runaway says:

Have Hud to a solo act. Mota sucks.

  • Mike L Morgensen says:

Horrible decision. With the exception of Rory, we’ve now got the most gawd-awful boring broadcasters in the business.

  • sikokitty says:

While I could care less about Steve, I’m really sorry to see Hud go. He was one the most energetic announcers the Angels have ever had. Always wanted to see him get paired up with Mark Gubicza. Would have made a great team.

  • Maryellen says:

This is very bad news. I’m so glad I gave up my season tickets. Can we trade Arte to another team? Arte has made such bad decisions, especially referring to the Angels as an LA team. Well, after 20 years I will go back to being a devoted Dodger fan and I live in Orange County.
    I am very sad.

    • Ayero says:

What are the other bad decisions? Signing the best available players every year? Putting a team on the field that makes the playoffs every year? Promoting within the company? What a terrible owner… Go back to being a Dodger fan, you will not be missed.

  • Doug Chase says:

This sucks I travel 9 months of the year in my motorhome and when I can’t get Rex and Phys on TV I turn off the sound and listen to radio or will have no sound at all. This is a very bad mistake.

  • ko says:

I always enjoyed the Angels broadcasts, which I would say were offbeat, but enjoyable in a down home sort of way. This has the stench of creating a more “LA” feel, which is too bad for all involved, especially the fans.

  • Sean E. Z. says:

Awful move, they got rid of the wrong two guys. You want your announcers to love your team. Phys and Hud loved the Angels, Mark and Rory have zero love for the team and the organizations. Its just a paycheck to them, Mark would rather be with the Royals and Rory belongs on the radio.

  • Liarsinthestands says:

This move means the Angels will NEVER, EVER, win another World Series..LOL!!!!

  • thetruthteller says:

Rex was the most likeable guy on TV but a terrible color man. I feel bad but am excited to see Terry, Rory, and Mota more regularly. Guby is mediocre but could develop into a better analyst

Rex was great on Friday afternoon pregame radio when he would interveiw former Angels/guests at a local sports bar. He was well suited to that and hopefully finds himself a daily/weekly Rex Hudler Show on radio.

  • Tady 45 says:

I am a big fan of them both, especially Rex. It took a little bit to get used to him in the booth but I loved him as a player and really enjoyed him in the booth. I guess Artie is taking Kick a Ginger Day to heart,

  • thetruthteller says:

Now they need to get rid of “Biggsy” on postgame radio.

  • jk says:

If Mota is doing play by play, I will not put up with that garbage, and I WILL turn the station. He is TERRIBLE and extremely hard to understand. His english is NOT the kind of english that is easy to listen to. Not a racist comment, just reality for those of us whose first language is english. Sad, sad, sad…

    • WEHAVEVINNY! says:

What a pathetic post. People like you are the reason I dont do angel games anymore. YOu say you are not racist, but I guarantee you that if Vladimir Guerrero were to say hi to your pathetic self lets say in the stadium parking lot, you wouldn’t be turning your back on him and saying hey Vlad needs an interpreter so I wont talk to him. Half of the angels team and all of baseball as a matter of fact has tons of people that dont speak perfect english like you. Its not like Mota is on the whole game or anything. You are TERRIBLE and easy to understand. You are the type of person that is not easy to listen. Not a racist comment, just reality. Sad, sad , sad,…….

      • jk says:

How long has Guerrero been playing baseball in the Major Leagues? And living and traveling in the US, where english is the official language? And the guy still can’t speak english? Doesn’t bother to try and learn the language? And cannot communicate with his teams fans because he doesn’t care to learn or speak english. You’re absolutely right. A complete turnoff when Vald and his buddies come on TV after the game and cannot communicate except through an inerpreter. Great players, in their time. TERRIBLE communicators and promoters of MLB and the Angels.

Good, don’t do Angel games anymore. Does anyone care???

  • Chris W. says:

Fox really is the evil empire personified. I loved those guys. Fox was also responsible for the Angels blackout on Charter Cable here in Long Beach for many long weeks.

  • You're Kidding says:

WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!!!…Hud and Phys are a great together and I always enjoyed listening to them call the Angel games. And, those of you ding dongs who say it bugs you to see Hud holding and playing with a baseball…what the F?!…it’s a baseball game, for christ sake!! If you don’t like Hud and Phys, then you’re just a little too ANAL!! BAD MOVE FOX!!

  • Rawlorollin says:

Screw the firings of Phys and Wonder fool, I’m still not over Joe Torre leaving the Angel booth!!

Get over it people! My goodness! Be more concerned we get a Ace pitcher and a big bat signing this off season! I’d rather have two noob’s calling the game and be WINNING then have two hall of fame play by play guy’s and have a bunch of losers in the cellar on the field..Bunch of freaken Whiners………

    Go Halos!

  • Tad Annoyed says:

First Chris Madsen from the Ducks and now Phys and Rex. Why do OC teams always let the best broadcasters go? I’ll miss Hudler’s insights and observations as well as his enthusiastic style and Physioc’s professional consistency. A sad day for fans that will likely be quickly forgotten by management.

  • Neil says:

Finally CHANGE I can believe in! Thanks FOX! I can finally watch a ball game without listening to that Noob Hudler!

    Go Angels!!!

  • Doug says:

Getting rid of Rex would be the same as the Dodgers getting rid of Vince Sully

  • Kitty says:

Markas & Gubicza bored the crap out of me last season. I really missed hearing Phys & Hud. They kept things interesting instead of putting you to sleep. Best of luck to both of them.

  • Jerry says:

It’s fun to listen to Rex & Steve call the game. Baseball isn’t the most exciting game to watch on TV and they made it enjoyable. Bad move Fox!

  • VoiceofReason says:

Hudler has everything a color man should have. Mota has zero. A very bad move, but not a surprise. Since Hud got popped for drugs a few years ago, they’ve been using him less and less.
Huge mistake. I won’t bother listening to the radio broadcast anymore.

  • GGAngelsfan says:

Dumb move. Always felt they were part of the team. Were their contacts too big. Don’t think so. Oh well maybe if enough fans complain Artie will bring them back. Maybe not!

  • Bebe says:

Morenos next move should be to offer lifetime contracts to Markus and Smith. Those 2 could be to the Angels what Vin Scully has been to the Dodgers.

  • MARC says:

THIS IS BS I HATE GUBBY AND RORY AND SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE I KNOW THEY SUCK F FOX SPORTS WEST

  • joey says:

No, not the Wonder Dog! I’ll miss those guys. Nothing against Gubee and Rory buty I enjoyed Rex and Phys more. It was like watching (listening) to a car crash sometimes but you had to listen. Rex with his way out stories and Phys bringing him back to the game. I can watch the Halos play pretty much any team play but when you had some stinkers like when they have to face the NL then you could count on Rex to keep you from tuning over to another channel. Good luck to both of them.

  • burgerdude says:

The Angels haven’t had good announcers since they had Al Conin on radio and Joe Torre on tv

  • angels fan says:

Markas is horrendous, and gubicza may know a lot about the game but he is awkward as a commentator. They sound very amateur. Hud and Physioc weren’t great, but they were certainly better than markas/gubi.

  • Wendy says:

    Rex you will be missed.

  • Maloney says:

    Rex was cheesy but entertaining!

  • Kurt says:

TERRIBLE!!! This is a horrible decision by Fox. Rex & Phys are the voice of the Angels. Nobody can deliver humor and insight like Rex. BAD CALL FOX!!!

  • realist says:

Hud was enthusiastic and excitable-there is obviously no place in baseball for people with those qualities.

  • A move they will regret. I liked the pairing of Phys and Hud on TV and Rory and Terry on the radio. I don’t know who makes these decisions but they certainly never take the fans into consideration. I realize some people don’t like them but more than 50% certainly do.

  • Greg says:

I am deeply saddened by this news. If you have ever watched or listened to baseball games from other teams, by comparison, it was like watching the play-by-play of a Kremlin funeral. I listen to the Angels on my iPhone using the MLB app. It lets me listen to games broadcast by our announcers or those of the other team. Invariably, with few exceptions, the broadcasts by Phiz and Rex in particular were fun and informative. We Angels fans have no idea how lucky we have it.

I always found Steve Physioc to be professional and upbeat. And Rex? What can I say? You either loved or hated him. I loved him. He was funny, energetic, insightful, sincere and most of all, Rex was one of us. He loves the game of baseball as much as anyone I have ever seen or heard. In a game often damaged by steroids, Alex Rodriguez and monster egos, Rex and Phiz made the game FUN. I think many of you won’t appreciate what we lost today until well after the fact.

Don’t get me wrong. Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza are good guys. They really are. Rory is good in the booth. But it won’t be as much fun, and to me, Rex and Phiz made Angels games special. I like Terry Smith and Jose Mota. Jose is indispensable as a go-to guy for interviewing the many talented Hispanic players on the Angels (and for that matter, Hispanic players around the league). He is professional and a very good interviewer. But his play-by-play skills are, well, boring. Terry Smith is nice enough, but can often be very dour. And that raises the boring factor by orders of magnitude.

Worst of all is when I have to endure watching a game on either Fox or ESPN. The Fox national broadcasters are complete frigtards: boring, unprofessional, Anti-Angels and totally uninformed. And don’t get me started on Ken Rosenthal - my only comments would be unprintable. ESPN is shockingly unprofessional for being a national network. Joe Morgan is often aloof, bored, patronizing and unpleasant. Jon Miller is a pleasant play-by-play announcer, but compared to Vin Scully, it’s night-and-day.

I am very disappointed in this sad news. I wish Rex and Phiz all the best wherever they land. Thank you so very much for such an outstanding job, and for making Angels baseball so much fun.

  • Neil says:

    WAAAAWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Hunger strike people!! Let’s do it!!!!! Picket!!!! How can they do this to Hudler!!!! No Rex No peace!!!! Sorry !@$!$ Fans we have!

  • HB Halo says:

This is just another example of why baseball is losing more and more market share. My teenage sons really enjoyed Rex’s energy and passion for the game. They love the Angels but I believe they are more interested in the NFL or NBA Even if they are Watching any team not just their favorites (thank you Xbox) They find it hard to watch just any baseball game, and if you ask them they consider Vin Scully to the be most boring announcer they had ever heard.

Guby’s dees and dos, ,Jose’s PC of the latin player’s translations and Terry’s eyore monotone are going to continue in keeping the young (and new)fans away. Certainly Arte understand’s this. But who controls the broadcast teams for Fox? Fox’s execs or Arte?

  • Angels=Braves says:

    Awful decision.

    Jose sucks.

  • Doug says:

Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza? Are you kdding me? That’s the best FOX can do? Rory has been and always will be a radio guy. Sorry Angels, but no more watching your games on TV for me. I will not listen to Rory as he flat out sucks on TV. Not to mention his “Just Another Halo Victory” pop he feels compelled to say every time they win. Do you really think they are all “Just another Halo Victory”? That’s a very stupid statement and now we have to hear it after every win? No thanks! A lot of the moves this team has made off field lately has left me to really wonder if this organization was better off being owned by Disney.

  • Robert says:

No more Rex the Wonderbong and Phys? What’s this world coming to??

    • just_sayin says:

Wow what a year! The Angels beat the Red Sox in the playoffs and now they get rid of the two worst announcers in all of baseball. Kudos Fox Sports West, it will be nice to actually be able to listen to the games now!

  • Bamajams says:

Terrible mistake, Hud can be annoying at times, but I think thats what makes the views appreciate him more, wondering what he will say next.

  • smoothoperator says:

arte morono screws it up again!

  • PM says:

I like both, but if I had to, I would keep HUD. He is truly animating and it’s fun to watch him commentate on the games. Only reason I like watching the after game shows.

  • johnnyg says:

    Hi,
I like Rory and Gubi but Gubi is not as fan friendly as Hud and Phys. Rory, Hud, and Phys will wander through the crowd giving high fives and chatting. I liked it when Mr. Moreno would wander through the crowd. People like him. He’s a very friendly guy. Maybe too risky? Not sure? Either way it will be sad to not have our two comedians feeding off of each other. Hud is like your crazy cousin. Likable but full of it. Either way those two guys will be missed. I wish them lots of luck. Go Angels. All of the way next season guys. Mike has got to pull out all of the stops in post season. That’s what it takes to be winners.

  • mark says:

rex is the spirit behind the rally monkey. good luck guys, i will miss u. looks like the rex haters scream louder.the squeeky wheel gets the oil. what a joke. gubicza has all the enthusiasm of a wart. he can,t carry rex hudlers jock

  • Mark says:

Hopefully these responses get in front of the powers to be and they realize their mistake and correct it ! Never too late to change your mind and make the right call !

  • scootermcray says:

Ok…we need let the Angels know how very unhappy the fans are over this decision. This is unbelievable and simply ruins watching/listening to the game.

Please share your displeasure with the Angels organization by sending letters to:

    Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
    2000 Gene Autry Way
    Anaheim, CA 92806

I wish I had an e-mail address (if anyone has one, please post it), so we can show our love for Phys and Rex. They are as much part of the Angels organization as Scioscia or Torri Hunter!

    Let our voices be heard!

    • Jodi Hare says:

steve Physioc and rex Huder you guys did a great job working for the angels It was meeting you Physioc you are a nice guy and so his Hudler. Physioc and Hudler will be missed bery much and I wish you guys all the best in the world. You guys did a fansatic job because there both very smart and they both know baseball very well. Please bring those guys back. Go Angels. Good luck to you guys physioc and hudler. we love you guys your the best

    • rusoviet says:

Good riddance to these two morons

  • Miguel says:

I’m really going to miss Rex. I had the pleasure of meeting him in New York. These are both fine gentlemen and will be sorely missed. They gave our Angels personality and worked well with the Orange County community. This is a terrible decision by Fox Sports.

  • Jodi Hare says:

We will miss you Physioc and huder you guys are the best . I love listening to you guys on tv and radio because there funny and Mota he stinks totaly and does Gubzica. gt rid of them and not Physioc and Hudler. Bring them back know or people won’t watch fox sports net anymore. and I won’t be the same either it’s going to be terrible know. you people are really mean to physioc and Hudler. You guys rock.

  • MATT LUNDIN says:

Even though Rex was not well versed in the English language when he was announcing, his positive personality and love for the Angels was always welcomed in my house. In my opinion, Fizz had the ultimate broadcast voice and was always well prepared to announce the game. They were a great team! I will miss them both and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!

  • Dave says:

Dear Mr. Moreno, Intangibles, every player has them. Rex has the ability to make people smile with his energy and love for the angels. Perhaps you could find him a job with the marketing department.

  • Jodi Hare says:

    Dear arte moreno,

Please bring back physioc and Hudler because there my buddies. There the best announcers you could ever have. Physioc and Hudler should come to angel games because there good fans and they like the angels. And the fans like them both I’m going to miss them very much.

  • Mark H says:

I totally agree with Jake Logan earlier, I find it shocking how little Rex (an ex-player) knows about the game. Anyone who enjoyed his “insights” really doesn’t know the game that well. If they did, they would have found him as annoying as myself and many others did. I’ve been an Angel fan since the late ’60’s and I got to the point where I couldn’t watch more than an inning or two when Rex and Phys were calling the game. I even found Phys regressing the last couple of years (probably a result of being in the booth w/Hudler for too long), but Rex was truly intolerable! I can now watch and listen to Angel games without cringing for nine innings.

    • F A Jackson says:

It is really truly amazing how many people don’t get this… It really shows how little Angels fans know about the game of baseball.

  • thirtyplus says:

I like listening to Phys. Hudler comes across a a buffoon. A nice buffoon, but a buffoon none the less. His shtick of always having a baseball in his hands has grown old.

  • John says:

Physioc is terrible, couldn’t stand to listen to his worthless comments having nothing to do with baseball. I am sure Hud bit his tongue many times instead of making a comment. Hud does get carried away with his cheerleading, but atleast he knows some baseball strategies. Bring back Tony Kubek and Joe Garagiola from the Saturday NBC games from when I was kid years ago.

  • gdb says:

no more wonder dog!? who else is going to tell me about the importance of body language??? that’s what i tune in for, man!

  • Mark H says:

I heard Rex say on more than one ocassion that a “tie goes to the runner” and “the hands are part of the bat” (which they aren’t) after a hitter was hit by a pitch. That’s all you need to know about his “knowledge” of the game. May be a great guy who’s fun to be around, but he was corny (same tired expressions and nicknames over and over) and flat out terrible as a broadcaster.

  • JCC says:

Get rid of Terry Smith…he’s the worst announcer in baseball!!!

  • Tustin Angel Fan says:

Thanks for everything Wonder Dog. You will be missed.

  • Bill says:

I’m surprised Fox actually had the guts to let them go, but am I ever glad they did. Understandably, they had a big fanbase, but the reality is that they were just awful at their jobs. They talked down to the audience and never provided any real insight. There were times I almost felt dumber after listening to them.

Gubicza’s not perfect but he’s so much more of an actual baseball analyst than Hudler was. And he and Markas work well together and I like their sense of humor a lot more.

Physioc isn’t bad when not partnered with Hudler, and he’ll find work pretty easily. I always thought Hud would’ve made a better coach in the minors than announcer. I’ll miss them in a weird way, but at least now I can watch games without lowering the volume.

    • Jake Logan says:

” I always thought Hud would’ve made a better coach in the minors than announcer”.
Are you kidding me? It’s not bad enough that Rex created a generation of Angel fans who know nothing about the game but now you want to turn him loose on our minor league system. Please tell me you’re joking.

  • Stephen says:

This would be less painful if the Ducks had better announcers replacing them. I love Rory Markus (I apologize if that is misspelled wrong) on the radio, but on tv I found the listening to him Gubicza real dry and boring.

  • Jeffrey says:

I wish Phys and Hud the best, but it’s time to end the Disney ownership age and move into a more down to earth broadcasting. Hud and Phys were Disney lame. But then again, I guess they fit the Angel fans pretty well. Disney lame. Go Dodgers !!!
    Peace.

    • anarchist316 says:

Figueres a dodger fan would bring up some stupid disney reference even though that ended years ago! LMFAO! What outdated reference will you make next pal?

  • mauimike says:

Wow, 172 comments about the announcers. This is the most noise I’ve heard since coming to this blog. None of these guys will win or lose a game. Have a nice Thanksgiving.

  • Drrunnin says:

You have to remember that FOX SPORTS are the ones with the Best Damn Sports Show Period, which in truth is the STUPIDEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW PERIOD. So for the them to make this move is no surprise.

  • Bill says:

It is funny how it’s sparked such a response. But I guess it’s easier to give an opinion on announcers than it is on managerial and personnel moves… unless you count comments like “They tried hard!” and “They should just re-sign everybody!” (Which, frankly, isn’t far from the kind of stuff Hudler says).

And Hud and Phys may not win or lose games, but they certainly ruined my ability to enjoy watching those games.

  • 866-JAIL-OUT says:

Its about time these guys really suck. Wonder Dog should do the coaching gig. Pysioc is boring and obnoxious. Rory Markus sucks too, Goobie aint bad. Boy am I glad we have Vinny Scully on our side! Go Blue.

  • Glory Be! says:

Finally!!! I have nothing against those guys personally, but this day was a long time coming! The Angels need announcers, not cheerleaders rambling on every game about the same things, over and over and over. This is wonderful! Rory Markus is a huge step up. Now if we can get Goobie to maybe talk half the time, we’d have a perfect situation. Asking too much?

  • Chilli_Dawg_24 says:

This is totally crap getting rid of wonder dawg. There isn’t any man on this planet that bleeds angel red than Hud. I’m go with Physic leaving, he rooted for the other team. Now we got to listen to Mr. Mumbles and drunken grandpa Markus. Rory can’t tell the difference between Tori and Howie most of the time and confused groundballs with flyballs.

  • Bob says:

This is quite a sad day. Hud did have his days where you wonder if someone spiked his drink or something, but I generally enjoyed his enthusiasm and candor.

    Hud-ism burned into my brain:
    - Complaining that Ichiro’s stats from Japan shouldn’t be considered. “Man, I wish they counted my stats from Japan…” (or something like that)

  • LetsGoMets says:

Wonder Dog was CLEARLY polarizing to the Angels fan community, as is evidenced by the responses to this story.

I liked him broadcasting games and enjoyed his enthusiasm, but I also totally understand why others couldn’t stand him.

I hardly think this is a story worth getting bent out of shape over though.

  • SoCalJules says:

Hmmm I watch the game to WATCH THE GAME!! I don’t turn in for the announcers. How silly to watch a sport based on who is calling the game.

I watch it to see angels hit balls and score runs and win games. When the last out is made I turn the tv off or change the channel.

I am 45 and have been watching Angels games since they were nothing more than a team you went to go see as a family outing…

So these past 7 years have been a blast to have a team doing so well in my backyard.

Oh and while I did prefer the name Anaheim Angels, I also own and love my California Angels jacket. How quickly so many forget they weren’t always the Anaheim Angels.

I shall go to the games next season and watch them on TV. And I hope whoever the announcers are spend more time staying quiet and letting me see the field of play…

  • Angel Fan 77 says:

We had the only announcer in baseball that didn’t know how to speak proper English or properly use a metaphor. Jose is a better speaker than Rex and it is not his native language. They have been looking for a good time to release him since his pot bust. I want my young son to love baseball but also realize the importance of a complete education and Rex only had half. I had to turn the sound off so he didn’t think all ball players were illiterate.

    • anarchist316 says:

      joses a better speaker?BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA sure….

      • Randy says:

I agree. Jose is not even close to be being a better speaker. Jose is a moron. I would bet that Angel Fan 77 likes the way Mota pronounces hispanic names…as if that somehow makes him more intelligent. He’s an idiot, and I can’t stand listening to him.

  • michael92610 says:

I think it is unfortunate that Angels Management has decided to release two great “professional” baseball announcers. I have met Steve Physioc and he is a friendly, articulate and humble man. He also announces other sports for the Fox Sports Network and does an outstanding job. Hud is just Hud….funny, expressive, and enthusiastic. If there is any way that the Angels may reconsider this move, I for one would encourage them to do so. Take nothing away from the plans for Guby and Rory to take the lead, but I think we will all miss Hud’s enthusiasm and Steve’s quality play by play. Angel’s management, are you listeninig?

  • Kyle Kauss says:

It would appear that this move is motivated by money. I don’t know for sure but would guess that Physioc makes more money than Rory. I like both and understand if the one making less money or the one who still has time on his contract or the one who is easier to work with behind the scenes keeps the job over the other BUT what they provide is entertainment and hopeful insight into the game. Gubiza seems like a really nice guy. He does not add as much entertainment or insight to the game.

Case in point, during a Rangers/Angels series the Rory/Gubiza team went the whole series puzzled by why Texas would play Vlade three on the left side the field sometimes and not others. They had not clue. In game two of the series they still were puzzled and they have a chance to talk to coaches between games. The answer was simple and some of us at home knew it. If the Angels had a runner on first the Rangers played everyone in the traditional spots and Gubiza had no clue. He was a good pitcher and again seemingly a nice person. He does not understand that strategy of the game outside of pitching.

Save some money on Rory versus Physioc fine but a good commentator should entertain and explain. Gubiza is not the right guy for that job.

  • Kukster One says:

I kinda like the move Fox made, Phys & Rex had too much homerism. I like Rory & Guby, they are well leveled not trying to side too much. As for those Jose Mota haters dissing his so called “speech impediment.” I assume you guys are the snobby Angels fans that know the monolingual housewives of OC very well and your ignorance is not far away from your trees. . He’s a great key to reel in really good Latino players to the Halo Org. So take that. Go L.A Halos w/no county boundaries, luv it…..

  • Bill Haugland says:

I don’t like the move. Phys and Rex were great for me - If I have to hear Rory say “Just another Halo Victory” one more time I will puke!

  • Joe Del Rea says:

I like Rory and Guby. They are a better team. Physioc banter with Hud got to be annoying and he made too many mis-calls.

  • bwlmvmnt says:

This is an early Christmas gift to Angel fans. I say bring back Sparky Anderson and pair him up with Mota, not polished but it would be fun to listen to.

  • Gregg Cooper says:

Wow…during the playoffs this year, it was very apparent that the TV commentators were not west coast fans. The gushing accolades for the Red Sox and Yanks were really getting me upset. The Angels have had a great season, heck, a great decade, and enthusiastic broadcasting was a huge part of my experience as a fan. Hud and Phys WERE PART OF THE TEAM whenever they broadcast. The post-season seemed like the Angels were playing minus two key players. When we see the dugout jump to their feet and holler after a long ball goes out of the yard, Rex was right there with those guys hollering and carrying on, and it made me even happier as a fan to hear it.
Many Angels players had injuries this year, and the team tragically lost a young pitcher. Hudler helped us to understand what the players were going through and what they were feeling better than anyone else could because he is near and dear to those guys. He talks to the audience in a way that helps non-baseball people understand the sport. Having coached youth baseball for many years, I can tell you that Hud’s kind of attitude and enthusiasm is EXACTLY what a team needs to keep them in the game; positive attitude, and thoughtful insights about that last play…
I am going to miss the professionalism of Steve Physioc and the enthusiasm of the Wonder Dog. A great combination for Angels baseball fans.

  • Numbskull says:

Who’s the donkey who made that wrong decision?

  • rob c says:

think fox made a mistake! no time to read all these comments to see all views, but Hud was an enthusiastic (?) angel fan. appreciated his insight to the Angels games.

  • Doug Chase says:

I am 74 years old and have been a angel fan since they first started. I

  • Alan Sheldon says:

“Just another Halo victory” sounds soooo corny, and Gubiza is another example of force feeding an ex-jock on the fans. Rex could be as little over the top but always entertaining/ Rex and Phys or Rory and Gubiza??? No contest! I’ll take Rex & Phys….

  • Section 208 says:

Bad move by the Angels. The Hud-Psyi team were fun to listen to & taught my wife & daughter so much about the game of baseball. Should have gotten rid of Mota instead - he adds little except for the spanish translation with Vladi in post game interviews. (Moot point since the Angels will not re-sign Vladi?) The guys they let go were the A-Team in my opinion for thier broadcasting crew. Sad news & wish they would reverse the decision. But, letting go of the fan favorites seems to be the way this management team operates. Also, the 10% bump in ticket prices for next season somehow has stayed under the radar. What is next - higher Beer & parking prices?

  • barry k says:

lets do a four for one trade, phys hud goobie and whats his name for vin scully!!!!

  • anarchist316 says:

No one made me more happy to and excited to watch an Angels broadcast and be a fan then REX HUDLER! DId these clowns see the mans joy in being an Angels announcer? Did they not see the fans reactions to seeing Rex so Hyper? Steve Physioc was almost the opposite but IT WORKED!!! Id laugh knowing that dodger fans had to deal with a snorefest broadcast thanks to Scully and the other clowns they have, but now? anger doesnt begin to explain my feelings right now…. Is there anyway we can petition this stupid move?

  • am says:

Really, getting rid of Rex & Steve, seriously? Rory and Mark are boring, plain, less than exciting and a torture to listen to. We watch the games to be excited, not to constantly hit the mute button. Watching the games will not be the same. Thanks FOX for fixing what wasn’t broken.

  • Tom says:

Who said Mota pronounces names right? He constantly calls Bobby “Abrearoo”

My girlfriend and I count how many times per broadcast Gooby says “quawatee” pitch.

Hud is an Angel, that’s all that needs to be said. As players come and go I always took comfort hoping that Hud and Scoscia would be here for a long long time. I often disagree with Scoscia but I believe he’s a great manager anyway. Hud isn’t perfect either but he’s a perfect Angel, and that matters!!!

  • Greg Reese says:

Streamlining? You call getting rid of “The Hud” streamlining? Come-on guys, you can do better than that! Why not keep Hudler and Marcus, now THAT would be an entertaining duo. Say a fond farewell to Steve and Mark. It’s already bad enough to be the “los angeles” Angels of Anaheim. Leave us alone and “let’s play ball”!!!

  • LandO says:

This is one of the worst decisions they have made. When Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza are broadcasting we turn the sound off. We can not stand them. Hudler is enthusiastic and it is good. Physioc and Hudler are a good team. Keep them and get rid of the other two!

  • SCOTT DONG says:

This really is a shame “Light up the Halo” was a staple phrase for this franchise, it went winning, tradition, and loyalty and the era of great announcers has ended, and to me me this smells like a total salary dump to me. But hey who am I, I am the guy that buys the tickets, listens to the games on the TV and Radio, supports the team in every aspect except this one SHAME ON THE ANGELS AND FOX SPORTS, BIG MISTAKE !!!!!!!! THE WILL BE MISSED AND NEVER FORGOTTEN…….

  • Diane Fallon says:

I’ll miss Hud’s exuberance and Phys’s knowledge. That being said, bring on Dave Smith. He has both and Angels radio isn’t worth listening to anymore without him. I’ve gone back to the Herd ever since they let Dave go. Where is he?

  • Randy says:

I have seen some stupid moves in my time, but this takes the cake. Rex and Phys were by far the premier broadcast duo for the Angels. Jose Mota is a moron who pronounces every hispanic name with full gusto (I used to cringe when Orlando Cabrera was on the team) because of his pronounciation.. Guby is..well, he’s Guby. He’s not a broadcaster at all. He’s a former pitcher who occasionally has some pitching insight, but that’s about it, and half of that insight is outdated philosphy anyway. Rory gets players names wrong all the time and does not know the difference between “retiring the side” and “ending the inning”.

I am really pissed off now.

Rex was the man..he was the perfect color commentator for Physioc’s play by play. Sure he was over the top and very animated,. but that is what made it special. Now we will have bland and boring.

I always detested this last season when the game would get carried over to a national broadcast and we’d have to listen to Joe Morgan and whoever call the game. I would rather have Hud.

I am so sorry to see them go, and it is my sincere hope that they land a really good job somewhere.
    .

    • F A Jackson says:

“He’s a former pitcher who occasionally has some pitching insight, but that’s about it, and half of that insight is outdated philosphy anyway.”

Really? Outdated philosophy? What would that outdated philosophy be?

Rex is a former utility player! Gubicza is a 2 time All Star and World Series winner.

  • Randy says:

Wanna know what I think is wild? This post has more replies than all the others. It’s not even close.

  • Baseballer says:

For you guys complaining about Arte Moreno, you are missing the boat. FOX fired Steve and Rex - not Arte. It was all about money. Fox kept reducing the games Steve & Rex would call last season, because they made a ton more than Rory & Guby. Arte doesn’t own Fox Sports.
Steve was below average. You always knew he was a typical multi-sport announcer “trying” to do baseball too. But Rex at least made it entertaining. It’s hard to believe in a semi-big market, the Angels do not have a legendary announcer. Sorry, but for knowledge and enthusiasm, Rory is average at best. Angel fans deserve better.

  • e. belgen says:

Different firection? To me not to have Hudler is going in a done direction just like the team. I know it is a “business” but the announcers bring a family feeling and friendlyness to the game. I didn’t know about the old days so I appreciated the info from Hud. Another tradition gone by the wayside.

  • Tom says:

I can’t believe Hudman is no longer an Angel announcer!! Another braindead decision by Fox.Hudler brings lots of insight and great enthusiasm to each broadcast. As an Angel fan for 30 years who grew up with Dick Enberg & Don Drysdale (best), i can’t believe some of these pocketbook decisions. If you are going to let them go, then go get someone better and don’t make a sideways jump but go up the ladder!

  • Glen Holland says:

    HUGE MISTAKE!
As an agent in the entertainment business for over 25 years, my job has been evaluating talent. Hud was one of the bright spots I could always count on and missed when he was not there.

Hud has the passion, personality, knowledge, enthusiasm and empathy that makes a great entertainer.
Hud as they say in show biz…this opens another stage door for you.
Someone at Fox/Angels missed this one hard and will realize when you land your next great gig.
No disrespect to Rory and Guby, but Hud was at another level and I for one am saddened and will miss “Just a lousy knock” You got to go” along with all your charisma.

  • Dave G. says:

I will miss both Steve and Rex. They were a great team. When Impemba and Sutton left Angels Radio for TV jobs with other teams, I listened to Markas and Smith from my seat in Angels Stadium for about a week, then stopped listening to Angels Baseball on the radio unless I had to. Markas is a dolt. We call him Dory, after the Ellen DeGeneres-voiced character in Finding Nemo. He doesn’t even know the rules of the game of baseball and still can’t get the players’s names right. He also might, just might, give you the score at the top and bottom of the inning… Maybe. Smith is OK but don’t listen to him while you’re driving. You might nod off and crash… In the middle of the afternoon Jose Mota is OK.

Now I will have to sync the TV broadcast of Away Games with the XM Satellite broadcast of the other team’s radio play-by-play. Anything is better than Markas.

  • Karen says:

I loved the team of Steve and Rex!!!!!! I missed them this past season.
They were barely on the tv. I loved Rex’s energy and exitement about the game of baseball.

I am ok with Rory and Mark , but will miss Steve and Rex alot.
The radio team I do not like at all.
I do not like to listen to Jose Mota.
    Dumb move Fox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Patti says:

Bad move for the Angels! When Rory and Gubi did the TV broadcasts this past season, I would mute the TV and listen to Phys and Hudler on the radio. At least they sounded alive. No offence meant to Rory and Gubi but no one can ever match the enthusiasm and fun that Hud and Phys provided. I have been an Angels fan since the early days and don’t know how I’ll be able to listen to the games next season. Best wishes to Hud and Phys and please know that you will sorely be missed.

  • texie tisor says:

So much for watching Angel baseball with the sound on! Last season when Hud & Steve were not announcing on tv we turned on the radio to hear them. Listening to Rory Markas and Mark Gubicza was similair to hearing two old cackling hens that spoke more about golf or what one was buying the other one as a gift…..makes me wonder. They also loved their own jokes and spent much time laughing at them although I don’t think the viewing fans found them funny. This has to be a political based decision because I am sure if it had been decided by fan vote (we are the $$$ that supports the team) Hud & Phys would win hands down. Too bad that this had to hit the paper the day before Thanksgiving……….certainly nothing to give thanks for!

  • Bryan Martindale says:

Are you kidding me? I always looked forward to seeing Phys and Hud doing play by play. Even when the game was a complete sleeper, they would make it interesting to say the least. Phys and Hud will certainly work somewhere else (probably not together) helping OTHER fans to thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the game. You got rid of the wrong tandem. Just another bonehead move!

  • Leonard Firebaugh says:

When was there a big surge in Angels’ ticket sales?
NOT because there were new big name players –
It was because of the announcers who put new excitement into the game — Steve & Rex.
They brought enthusiasm that has not existed in baseball since the days of Harry Caray, Jack Buck, & Joe Garagiola with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Now we have “good” announcers, but on the same level as the rest of major league baseball — so, so!

    • F A Jackson says:

Hahahahahahahahaha, this is the most ridiculous thing I think I have ever read. Please tell me again that you think the ticket sales went up because of Steve and Rex! Please, I have to see it again to believe it.

    • J-Dizzle says:

Leonard… I love Rex and all as an announcer, but announcers don’t sell tickets! Announcers are there for the t.v. viewers, not the people at the game watching. Their job is to get people who aren’t at the game to watch the game on t.v. so they can sell the game and make it more interesting which in turn gets them to view the advertisements between innings and during stoppages and the advertisements you see postered around the stadium when the cameras are panning around.

  • Cy says:

I thought Angels broadcasts are supposed to be not only informative - score, pitch count, etc. but also entertaining. When it comes to the entertaining part there is none better for the Angels than Rex Hudler. I will miss his take on Angels baseball next year and beyond. I will be looking out for wherever he lands because I value his honesty and humility. No, he never was an All Star or acheived a legendary status, but his humble attitude and passion for Angels baseball is something none of the others who were retained can match. Hopefully the Angels will make a place for Rex on their AM 830 radio station, which is probably a more fitting place, on a strictly Angels perspective, to be.

  • Mark H says:

I’m absolutely astonished by the reaction of the Hudler supporters. Physioc is a fairly solid play-by-play guy, but had become increasingly annoying over the last couple of seasons. While Hudler the homer is enthusiastic and upbeat, he’s a terrible broadcaster. I can see his act playing maybe in Chicago where clowns like Harry Carey, Ron Santo and Ken Harrelson have been revered, but in SoCal??? I’m one who found Hud detracting from my enjoyment watching a game, not adding to it. Most fans will need to be retrained on the game if they think they learned anything by listening to Hudler over the years.

  • James Q says:

A truly sad day for Angels fans. Phys & Hud were entertaining and a huge part of the Angels experience. You were not only turning on the TV to see the team but also to hear their broadcast. Phys & Hud gave you the comfort of home and a family experience. They connected with the fans and gave you the feeling of being part of the home team. Hudler brought entertainment and excitement to the broadcast. Whatever negative comment you could make about him you could not deny his passion for the game, the Angels and the fans. Rex was the biggest Angels fan and his passion was contagious. Phys & Hud will be sorely missed.

  • Art / Fountain Valley says:

Hudler (was) the only interesting and truly informative announcer the Angels have had, boring is too mild a description for the rest, Physioc or Mota maybe a good “foil” for Rex. Considering Fox’s treatment of news and sports in general, why are they (and why the Angels) dropping Rex, they should at least give the “explanation!” Even my cockatiel would go outside his cage and crane his neck to listen to Rex, for the rest he’d continue his nap (he’s 28 years old). Even the advertisers might regret having announcers so dull that viewers turn off the sound (continuing with the commercials!).

  • Tamara says:

FOX What are you thinking????? Phys and Hud are one of the best things about watching the Angels on TV!!! They are the only commentators that actually sound like they are having a great time at the ballpark. Anyone can drone on in a monotone voice while they read stats and retell what the last play was but Phys and Hud brought a personality to it all. I would always smile at they way Phys and Hud played off each other. And who will ever forget all the nicknames Hud had for everyone? They make television views feel like they are hanging out at the ballpark with their buddies.

I am so upset that I can’t even mute the TV and listen to them on the radio like I used to do when Rory and Gubi broadcasted last season. FOX You picked the wrong two people to leave!!!!

Phys and Hud you will be missed. Maybe FOX will wake up and realize the big mistake they just made. I will pray for your return to the Angel’s Airways.

  • agarcia says:

they both sucked, they should of never been hired.

  • Steve Leonelli says:

I’m thrilled. Nothing ruined an Angels game more than listening to Physioc and Hudler. In a city where the spoiled Dodger fans get to listen to a Vin Scully, Angel fans have the Abbott and Costello of the sportcaster world.

  • madashell says:

I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore. I won’t be listening to the annoying Rory and boring Mark. PLEASE bring back Rex!

  • John says:

While you can argue if Hudler was good or annoying I just don’t see how anyone in their right mind can think Mota is any good. He is more annoying that Tim McCarver, I’m glad I don’t listen to the games on the radio that much.

  • Don Huber says:

My wife and I will miss the Physioc and Hudler team. They made the game a fun experience, win or lose. Hopefully they can move up from their Angel experience and we will hear them again soon.

  • Rich Ramirez says:

In my opinion, the broadcasting teams were not broken, then a couple of years ago, they started messing with it by bringing in Mark Gubicza and Jose Mota. Mark and Jose appear to be very nice people, however, they leave a lot to be desired in the booth, I have started calling Mark Yoda as in Star Wars, because he always speaks backwards for example, he will say something like… the shoulder opens up and doesn’t finish through the delivery - Ervin Santana does! Jose was somewhat good when translating for the Latin American players, although he doesn’t always translate what they say, he seems to edit the content.
When Hud was put on the radio, I e-mailed Fox and started listening to the radio as I watched the game.
In my opinion, Hud was a great role model for the young viewers & listeners, with his positive and grateful attitude.
They will be missed and Angel broadcasts will be dull.

  • Angelsrock says:

WTH!!!!!! I can understand Physioc, but Rex??!!!!!!!!!

This is BS!! The one and only true Angel fan on the broadcasting team!

  • chuck nanez says:

Good riddance to both Rex and Physioc. Rex always talked about the “way he played” the game and Physioc was robotic. Thank you and
    move on!!

    Chuck Nanez
    La Mirada

  • just_sayin says:

I am not for people losing their jobs but this was a long time coming. Fox Sports West, you got it right this time. Physioc seemed like he was learning on the fly the whole time he was an Angels announcer, so bad. It is really sad when somebody like Rex Hudler has to repeatedly correct you. Now we can listen to some real announcers do what they are supposed to do, announce the game and not hoot and holler like Hawk Harrelson.

  • JR Flores says:

Just wondering if the Angels management have a broadcaster in mind as they make these changes, but it would seem they are after a ‘particular’ type of voice to represent them, and evidently, it is not a ‘Dizzy Dean”-type.

Attention Arte M.: There is only ONE Mr. Vince Scully, and the L.A. Dodgers have him until retirement!

  • barry says:

the enthusiasm hud brings to the game is so refreshing, just watch the main fox telecast w/ tim what’s his name blabbering on and on and you’ll see my point. the first time i saw hud i thought he was a joke, but after watching alot of games over the past 8 yrs he really brings a great knowledge to the game, alot of times telling you what will happen in a certain situation and he is usually right on. he always let’s us know why a certain manager move is made and brings an experienced insight into the game, all at the time of being a true angel fan and believer.

  • Jon says:

our loss will be another teams gain…we will miss you Hud Man!

  • Buckeroo says:

So, does this help us get to the World Series? Hey Artie, can you focus on the guys playing the game more than those telling us how they are playing?

  • Dave Leahy says:

What is the name of the moron who made the decision to “can” Rex Hudler? I was born and raised an Angel fan. Hudler is not only a broadcaster for the Angels but a FAN. I remember when Dick Emberg was the Angel game broadcaster. He was pathetic. Not a fan. This decision reeks. Three cheers for putting boring back into Angels baseball. BO-BO-BO.

  • Jeff says:

Terrible move by Arte, Rex your positive attitude and enthusiasm will forever be remebered by Angels fans-hopefully the Dodgers will sign you so you’ll stay local.

  • BILL GIBSON says:

The Angels seem to be moving away from their connection with their own public. First, they dismiss two long standing community relations professionals from the front office. Now, they throw out two popular broadcasters, Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler. I thought Steve and Rex were an outstanding and enjoyable team. I totally agree with columnist Randy Youngman’s take on this. The whole development is just sad.

    • just_sayin says:

It’s called success and I am ok with it, keep putting a winner on the field. It’s not about you or what you want, it’s about the business that the Angels organization is. That’s all there is to it.

  • Rita Omaln says:

Boo on the Angels. Been listening forever to Rex and Steve. Won’t be the same…..Gubie garbles his words and Jose is mostly not understandable. I’ll watch the games with the sound on “mute”.

  • BILL GIBSON says:

I became hooked on Angels Baseball with the teams of Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler on TV, and Rory Markas and Terry Smith on radiio, and I will miss those combinations. Some have said they were annoyed by Hudler’s enthusiasm. I have been annoyed by the Markas and Gubicza nonstop giggling.

  • Doug Van Tuyl says:

Mota is a better broadcaster than “Phys” and “The Wonder Dog”? No way, Jose. A better solution would have been to let Terry and Steve alternate play-by-play and keep the colorful Rex as the color commentator. Fun just left the Angels’ airwaves.

    Doug Van Tuyl
    Cypress, CA

  • Armando Tarin says:

Lets face it. The “Hud-Dog” is one of the true passionate tv personalities who is emotionally and sometimes physically involved in his team. He loves the sport. Love his Angels. He was great off the camera too, dedicating his time before and after games, not too mention, great with the community too. I for one will miss his off the wall comments. I think the Angels should keep him. Physioc is a little boring at times. Rex Hudler is the one im listening to when watching Angels games. Who needs to be politically correct. Hud wasnt, im not, this is baseball. His character and personality and true passion said it all.

  • James E. Ray says:

I AM NOT AN ANGELS FAN, but I loved watching the games because of Rex and Steve. They really madethe enjoyable and interesting to watch. IT’S A SAD DAY IN ANAHEIMVILLE. If I were a real Angels fan I think I would boycott next years broadcasts.

  • Bill says:

Fox is trying to save money and probably cut the two higher salaried announcers. Another typical corporate blunder.

While Rory Markas is good, Phys and Hud both blow Mota and Guby away. Angel announcing will be as boring as Dodger announcing.

And yes, that includes the way over-rated Scully.

  • twirvca says:

I am extremely disappointed that Hud and Phys have been let go. Hud was the main reason I became a devout Angel fan. I looked forward to hearing him describe a game. What is it with OC teams and their broadcasters? First the Ducks part ways with a very popular Brent Severyn and bring in the very dry Dan Woods (I can’t even listen to the radio broadcast anymore and I used to listen while AT the game) and now this. Humor and the insights of a former player are so much appreciated when listening to a broadcast. I won’t say they’ve lost a fan but I certainly won’t watch or listen anymore…I’ll just read about the game the next day in the newspaper…sorry Arte…first adding the LA to the name and now this…you lost me…

  • Jen Farrell says:

Stupid move. These two guys bring the game to life. Steve and Rex are a great team and should be THE voice of the ‘Anaheim’ Angels.

  • Jean says:

I whole heartedly agree with the move. I quit watching Angel games on TV because of those two (especially Hudler). If their broadcasting wasn’t enough reason to cause me to watch another sporting event that constant, annoying tossing of the baseball by Hudler was the clincher. I don’t know how many times I wanted to go to the park, take it away from him and throw it out in left field. Thanks for some new blood so I can once again enjoy an Angel game on TV.

  • rob says:

Rex is without a dobut THE most inspirational, positive , energetic colorful entertaining announcer in the game, bar none. He singlehandedly make me love the game and come out to the stadium. I learned so much listening to Rex and I learn nothing from Rory and very little from the others. Now we’re left with nothing but bland, unentertaining guys.
who will do nothing to motivate ticket sales like the wonder dog did.
Bad for the fans and bad for the bottom line. This move is a disgrace
    to the fans.

  • Christine says:

What an AWFUL move by the Angels! I love listening to Hud and Phys — they add so much fun and energy with their commentating.

  • baseballfan says:

I feel that Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc were the voices of the Angels. I enjoyed their commentaries and they had interesting things to say about the Angels and their opponents.
I will miss them and feel it’s a mistake to take them off the air.
I will be less inclined to stay and listen to Markas and Gubicza. I didn’t care for their announcing during their broadcasts for Fox Sports. I guess Fox wants their commentators to all be boring like the other teams.

  • Bonnie Davidson says:

I will miss Rex and Steve more than I can tell you. I used to turn the sound off on the TV and listen to the radio when they were on the radio even though it didn’t match up. They made the game fun whereas Guby and Rory were so boring. I’m really sad about this move!

  • Bill says:

Sorry to see Hud go but Steve leaving is way overdue. He was the most mistake prone announcer that I ever heard on tv. There was a guarantee of mis speaking or getting facts incorrect in EVERY single game I heard him announce. This is disgusting especially in a profession that you can call up the facts Good riddance STEVE!!!

  • Jodi Hare says:

Rory markas and Gubiza are going to boring on tv Physioc and Hudler were funny.I always looked to watching the angels because of Physioc and Hudler. The angels the best broadcasters in the wor;d Physioc and Hudler. Your wife is smart Physioc. Thank you for all your hard work Physioc and Hudler you guys were great. I always enjoyed you both. I read your book Hudler and it was very good. go to an Angel game Hudler and Physioc.

    • John says:

Let me get this straight…..The government say’ we are out of the reccession….The Angels get rid of Physioc and Huddler…..and they just canceled Thanksgiving…..What a fine mess this is.

  • Pegi says:

BAD MOVE,FOX!! Markas/Gubicza are boring! Thank God for the mute button!

  • Rick Crawford says:

Hudler is one of the GREAT color men in any sport, and the loss of his vibrant enthusiam is going to be sorely missed - Angels/Fox brass must really want the telecasts to lean heavily to the BORING, LIFELESS side, which is hard to comprehend. I like Rory Markas, but don’t ditch Rex Hudler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fran Morrison says:

Listening to Gubicza is about as much fun as watching paint dry. He seems to think that arcane information about the mechanics of pitching is interesting to anyone but a pitcher. Rex made it interesting for a non baseball-playing fan. I kept tuning in last season in hopes that Steve and Rex would be announcing. I won’t be watching many games next year.

  • FRANKTORRES says:

As a long time Angel fan i don’t remember listening to a color commentator as polarizing as Rex Hudler. He keeps the game exciting and informative in a way that every Angel fan can relate to, understand and be interested in. In other words there is never a dull moment with Rex commentating a game.I’m mad and sad, Rex is the best. He makes you want to see the game.Lets vote? That shouldn’t even be a question! I can guarantee if you ask any true Angel fan how they feel about this change, they will say this is travesty !

  • mgonzo2u says:

BAD MOVE, FOX! I will no longer make it a point to watch my Angels on your channel as Phys and Hudster were the added components that made watching the game on your channels in OC worth my time.

    Not anymore.

    STUPID, STUPID, STUPID DECISION.

  • EL DUDE says:

I will miss The Hud, loved his insight, and he called it like it was. No excuses when the Angels messed up, or a play should have been made. Hate to see you go Hud!!! You were the man!!!

  • John K F says:

I am really glad that the Angels finally got rid of the annoying Rex Hudler. I feel sorry for Physioc. I think he went down on account of Hudler. Now if the Angels would just get rid of their batting coach, Mickey Hatcher. Hatcher is only good enough to carry Tori Hunter’s bats and gloves. Looking forward to next year’s radio broadcasts without Hudler.

    • rusoviet says:

Physioc was his own worst enemy ‘Hey Sgt. Rock then what did you do?’ Hudler ‘Well little buddy I tore that towel head’s head clean off and then I shoved a grenade into his ‘neck!’

      Physioc ‘Wow Sgt. Rock! Wow!’

      Good riddance to them both

  • Bruce says:

We are totally disgusted with this move. Steve is a true professional and Rex adds the color and insight his role calls for. We couldn’t wait for their return to the TV booth every time the other two jokers were calling the games. And I mean that literally; it was sickening to listen to them laughing at each others jokes and comments. “Come on, guys, get back to the ball game”. Oh my, it is going to be a long season.

  • mark norton says:

I am very upset. I have been an angel fan since I was very young and have heard and seen many broadcasters, none of which had the passion and love for the game as Hudler. Anyone who knows baseball understands the perspective he gives the broadcast, he is to baseball what Madden is to football. I hope the angels realize this before too long.

  • bryan3636 says:

The handwriting was on the wall two seasons ago when the Angels reduced Physioc & Hudler’s workload and then this last season when they cut it back even more. It was a slap in the face to the veteran Angel announcers but to their credit they didn’t complain publicly. They accepted their assignments and acting professionally. So while this is a shock to most Angel fans I’m sure Steve and Hud expected it. And once again, they handled it with class.
Rory Markus does a credible job and while getting better, Gubby is still the pretty boy learning on the job. I’m not overly impressed with his baseball knowlede as it sounds like he’s repeating things said in his ear by his producer. And heaven help us when the game is out of hand and the two of them go off script and get silly, giggling like little school girls. Hmmmm, don’t remember Vin Scully doing that. But to each his own. I’m hoping the ever positive, never met a person I didn’t like Physioc lands on his feet with another pro team. Hudler will always find a place to work I’m sure. They’ll be missed but life goes on and so will the Angels.

  • Dave Hasty says:

I am going to miss both of them. I found myself not watching games when Phys and Hud weren’t the broadcasters. And I totally agree with an earlier comment that Mota is the worst broadcaster ever. Bring back Phys and Hud.

  • J. Wilson says:

Don’t expect much as long as Fox TV does the games.

  • Annie says:

“Just another Halo Victory” Whichever announcer utters that, sounds like an anemic amoeba!! Oh, spare me. Being entusiastic isn’t in their job descriptions, apparently.
I emailed the Angels in early Fall, complaining about Rory & Gubi, and did receive a reply letting me know when Rex &Steve would be broadcasting on tv again. Big deal. I could see the handwriting on the wall then and I’m not happy then or now.
Only the best to Rex & Steve, They will be missed.

  • Tito says:

Steve: “…And the Angels trail by 7 runs going into the bottom of the 9th. But of course, Rex, it’s never over until that final out!”

Rex: “That’s right, Phys! The beautiful thing about baseball is you just never know! And if they don’t come back, hey, it’s okay, because there’s always tomorrow!”

    Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

  • Halo Space says:

Sign this PETITION to bring back Rex and Steve. It only takes 2 seconds and its FREE. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/saveourbroadcasters

  • eric O says:

If you’re going to get rid of two callers, Hudler and Gubicza [please say something other than "parda da plate" every 11.5 seconds!] should be removed. But I’ll take the loss of Physioc if it means the loss of Hudler. I’ll be personally sad to lose the Rory and Terry combo on radio, since that’s the only way I get to consume games, and since they are the best we’ve got. But knowing that Rex will no longer be embarrasing the Angels will help me get over that loss. During one game last season, I started to write down all of the ridiculous, embarrassing, grammatically and factually incorrect things that he said and I had to quit after the third inning from the ensuing depression. Mota and Gubicza are not good, Hudler is terrible (excitement and enthusiasm do NOT compensate for incompetence). Removing Physioc along with Hudler was not the best choice but, in the end, the action of getting rid of Hudler was the right one.

Firing Hudler is a huge mistake. Was he goofy? Yes. Corny? Often. Entertaining? Always. I’ve been a fan for 40+ years, but In the era of free agent, corporate baseball, I watch/listen to the game purely for the entertainment value now. Getting emotionally invested in any one player or team is pointless. Rex did his job well and always made the show very entertaining. I’ll miss him.

As for Jose Mota, I’d rather listen to someone reading the phone book on the air. Mr. Moreno can subtract one more radio listener from his Nielsen demographics.

  • Ernie says:

I can’t tell you how many times I wished that Phizz would just call a routine play (if there is such a thing in RF for the Halos) a routine play and how many times I turned down the sound because Hud was off on a tangent or wished for some dead air time during their broadcasts (my ears got tired listening to the babble) — so I don’t think they are perfect — but that said, these two were the Angel’s best announcer combination — the total being more than the sum of the parts.
RM has the edge on Phizz because he is less of a cheer leader but MG??? please — next to Jose Mota he is the worst - talks far too much and contributes little of interest — as if he is auditing to replace Tim McCarver on FOX.
I’ll miss Phizz and Hud and I’ll watch a lot of baseball with the sound off next season — but hey, all is not lost, at least then I won’t hear the ridiculous Howard’s commercials

  • TJ says:

Ah man…what a complete bummer. There’s was nothing more enjoyable than listening to Rex and Steve calling a game. I enjoy Gubi, et al, but Hud was the cheerleading heart and soul of the team. And poor Steve was the perfect straight man. Hate to see them go.

Rex and Steve…I hope you’re reading these posts. My family and I are gonna miss you guys. Listening to the Angels just ain’t gonna be the same.

  • Brett B says:

Yippie! I can start watching & listening to Angel games again. Thank you Angel organization. It took you awhile, but you finally got it done.

  • R U Kidding me? says:

Just heard about Hud and Physioc getting the boot! Can’t believe they would keep Mota and Terry Smith. They are the two worst broadcasters EVER! Gubby and Rory are OK - but Hud was the best. So sad! Not much left of the Anaheim Angels anymore. With Lackey and Figgins likely gone - the only one left from the ‘02 team will be Scott Shields - if he can rehab. Gotta love Aybar and Morales, etc. but it’s a sad day for real Angel fans!

  • Bob Gardner says:

Okay if this is what Angel Broadcasting is then:- Rory has got to stop the sophmoric riduling of Guby- They both have to let go of a joke after one or two comments and stop going off on ridiculous tangentsand mercilessly beating a joke into the ground-Their jokes about the Angel promotions can’t be amusing to the sponsors. -Guby yes we know your anser is Dean Chance - not amusing any more and finally- Guby the trivia question is for us- alll over the southland you and Rory are muted through the fourth inning so we can try the trivia question without you weighing in immediately. It needs to become a lot more professional - we actually enjoyed the break from you guys when Rex and OPhyss took over and the were ready for a break form them when Rory and Guby came bac- it is going to be along season without the breaks if rory and Guby don’t clean it up.

  • avedward says:

I,m going to miss Hudler.Despite his struggles with the english language he was always entertaining and gave the listener fine insight into game situations and the game of baseball in general.Gubi and Rory should really count their lucky stars that they weren’t the ones to got the boot.
Hope that Rex lands on his feet somewhere.

  • Mike H. says:

Worst news of the day. I miss those guys already. Fox should reconsider.

  • Ridge Runner Sam says:

The Fox decision is indeed sad as Steve and Rex were enjoyable. We are left with two lack luster and booring TV announcers. We will dontinue what we started this year when they are on the air. We will mute the audio and watch the video. Wjy muck up the video with the horrible audio with Gubie and Rory

  • maintiger says:

I hope the Angels reconsider and bring Rex back in some capacity- He brought excitement and color to the game- the other guys are just boring

  • LA Guy says:

It’s baseball folks, a game, fun, remember? It’s not the news. It’s not politics. It’s baseball. Hudler is a great guy and fun. Do you really believe Mota is going to make the games more fun? Was Harry Carey a clown? Phil Rizzuto? He’s pro Angels, so what? Who are all these serious baseball people calling the Angels and complaining that he’s a clown? Aren’t there enough kids to yell at to get off your lawn? People complaining he was always tossing a baseball during the broadcast? It’s baseball, man, he’s having fun, and the end of my stressful day i look forward to Rex sharing a few laughs. There’s a reason Terry Smith and Jose Mota aren’t asked on Jim Rome, they’re not funny or entertaining. You get pre-game info, in-game info, post-game info, Angel Talk on the radio, newspaper coverage, blogs, MLB online, and now a TV network… you aren’t getting enough pure strategy talk? Some people would complain about anything and apparently do. The guy does so much charity work in the name of the team and was their best ambassador. Bah Humnug Angels

  • Carlos says:

Curious as to why so many are blaming FOX for this. Isn’t it a team decision who announces the games? And to those of you calling Phys a true professional… you could of fooled me. The guy hardly knew what inning it was, who was at bat, retold the same old story for every player (hey, did you know Melvin Mora had quintuplets???), and generally just didn’t seem to be aware of what was going on half the time. Rory is a huge upgrade in my humble opinion. Part of me will miss Rex, though.

  • rusoviet says:

Per Hudler I never questioned his sincerity it was evident of his commitment per the ‘downs syndrome’ child he is raising. My problem with Hudler was that he brought nothing to the game save sophomoric idiocies and corn-pone patented ‘Jimmy cracked corn and I dont care’ because so many thought he was amusing.

Hudler has no skill in announcing a game he couldn’t if his life depended on it. He was a classic clown and a bore.

Last July ‘Rex’ claimed he was at old Exhibition Stadium in 1983 in Toronto when Dave Winfield hit a seagull with a baseball. Mind you Hudler did not start any NYY games until 1984. There was the memorable afternoon in 2007 when, because of a rain delay, Hudler went on a >8 minute tale of being the one Ed Whitson turned to just prior to mixing it up with Billy Martin in 1985.

All Angel fans always knew sometime during the season Hudler would tell us ‘Hey Notre Dame offered me a football schollie but de’ Yanks drafted me No. 1 in 1978!’

Now before you think I am being unfairly prejudicial towards ‘Rex’ understand the problem really wasn’t Rex - the problem was and is Physioc.

Physioc of the two was the one that was shocked according to your article in the Times - not Hudler. Hudler took it like a man - kudos for that.

Physioc now realizes his ‘Martin’ to Hudler’s ‘Lewis’ is the main reason for his being shown the door. He (Physioc) earned his firing because it was his own discourse with Hulder that enabled Hudler to become the braying mule that he is. ‘Aw come on Rex tell us about that time you….’

Anytime Hudler was paired with anyone other than Physioc, the idiocy was cranked back - way back. With Physioc it was full throttle and finally, thankfully, LAA mgmt. reocgnized what the rest of us knew - Hudler isn’t the problem - that’s what he is - no matter he needed to go. The problem was and always was Physioc -

Good riddance to them both and good luck Rex - go see if Geoff Biggs needs a partner or better yet maybe Joe MacDonnell needs a new punching bag.

  • Redondo Red says:

The Ralley Monkey has more insight into baseball than Rory Marcus. He’s more interested in his little “inside” barbs with “Gooby.” Count how many times he doesn’t know who’s at bat, what the count is or how many outs there are. Jose Motto is the best of the lot.

  • Keith Hays says:

Well I for one will not be listening to Angels games on TV this year. This will be like watching grass grow in the yard, or paint drying on the walls.

  • Jimbo says:

Take a look around….Arte (Los Angeles Angels) and Fox (Hud and Steve) are taking the Angels we grew up with….further and further away from us….. Let’s call ‘em the …the….the …I know ! The Clippers !

  • Marston Thompson says:

Towards the end of last season I watched whats their names broadcasting a game and unlike Hud and Steve, these two are pointing out people, trying to be funny and just waisting time. But Hud and Steve would always let us know about the journey of the minor leaguers on their trip up the ladder. Rancho Cucamonga to the bigs. That info, to me was priceless and I guess now over. Maybe if Mr Moreno would watch games on TV once in a while, this FOX decision would not have been made. But it was and angle fans lost more than just two announcers. We lost two great friends. God bless you two for all you have given us. We will not forget.

  • Mike says:

Firing Rex Hudler & Steve Physioc is very sand and a big mistake. Do these front office “PR” robots ever consider asking the fans for input, Rex & Steve brought life to a baseball game that sometimes if you’re not at the stadium can get a bit boring. Rex & Steve were fans, just like us. You felt their passion, the highs & lows you always knew that Rex had a ball in his hand. My kids loved Rex. He always had tips, lessons or teachable moments during a game, great stories too, Rex & Steve, you will be missed

  • G-MAN says:

They may not have been the greatest announcing team but at least they made it interesting! I know this Jose Mota sucks he may be a nice guy but half the time you cant understand him and he is as boring as watching snow melt. He is a however one heck of a Interpreter yeeeehaaaaaa! By the way when it comes to being a homer every announcer lovers their pwn team trust me on that one! WOnderdog had more passion than any color man I have ever heard if tha makes me stupid then so be it. I liked the stories personally they are things you dont hear form other guys

  • meloc2001 says:

Sorry to see them go - Rex’s excitment and passion will be missed. Gubby is a snooze in comparison.

  • Jerry says:

The Angels once again prove they are a second rate organizatiion. Steve and Rex are excellent announcers who have a passion for the game and really represented the Angels very well. They are being replaced by two guys who have no excitment and the commentator can not talk. He can not find words. Absurd. Second rate organizations like the Angles will never win the big ones. Mr. Moreno go back to Billboards. You obviously have no understanding of good announcers. Even the fools who own the Dodgers know good announcers.

  • treman says:

This is a bad move by Fox. Though I spport Fox News. This move is one of the worst. Gubicza is not even a loyal Angels fan. Hudler is! Gubizca is a dodger faithful. May be let go of Physioc. But not Hudler. He’s the one who brought life to the broadcast. I know another broadcast network will probably pick them up. It’ll just be Fox’s loss. With us dragged through the mud.

  • treman says:

    J Dizzle.

Maybe you and dos angel staff or Fox Sports media staff been smokin’ som of dos pot joints, heh? to make a decision like letting go of hudler? Why you even on here anyway? Your eyes are too red to see the screeen of the TV.

  • Deadend says:

Bet if rex changed his name 2 jose
he would still have a job….P.S
sho me one angel fan that likes the LA tag
i will still be here when artie kicks rocks
dont let the door hit you on the way out transplant
    THIS IS ORANGE COUNTY
    BEFORE AND AFTER

  • Jerry says:

It is interesting and very telling about how bad the Anlgel organization is that the two executives who fired Steve and Rex just got promoted by Arte. It is clear that Arte has replaced Sterling as the worst owner in sports. God do we miss Jackie and Gene Autry. They had classs and an understanding of how important fans are and announcers are to those fans. Arte, plse sell the team and go back to Billbaords. They need you.

  • Steve Aken says:

Just thank God the Dodgers gave Scully another contract or we Angles fans might have been stuck with the constant monotone dribble and facts that only an 82 year old announcer can come up with between pitches.

  • Dan B says:

    Wrong move Angels.

Could someone set up an independent audio webcast or radio broadcast with Rex and Steve? I’d turn down Fox TV audio and listen to R&S, and pay a few buck a month extra for that. Maybe if there were enough fans chipping in a few bucks, it could happen.

    • The answer to that gets slipped into the broadcast of every game:
“This copyrighted telecast is presented by authority of the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball. It may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form, and the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without express written consent.”

  • J-Dizzle says:

Take a look around. It’s well on its way. Especially since it can help with economic recovery through taxation. Hell, with all the pot smokers out there, it’s got less health risks and is an overall lower risk then people who drink let alone smoke. 500k signatures right now on a petition that needs 650k to put it on the ballot to be voted on. It will make it legal and taxable by the state of California.
