Bobby Grich makes a fan

November 9th, 2009, 2:19 pm by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

I had the pleasure of covering the Challengers event at Angel Stadium Saturday and met a ton of great parents, grandparents and kids. It seemed like a genuinely joyful afternoon for a group of people who have difficult lives grappling with severe disabilities.

Today, I got an e-mail from another parent, who volunteers as an assistant coach for one of the teams. Her name is Janet Du Bry and she wrote to praise former Angels great Bobby Grich, who kept his cool when an autistic kid named Noah began to get a little antsy when the photographer was lining up the team photo.

So there we were, trying to be still in the hot and humid weather, all stuck together in sardine fashion, camera down and there goes my player. He begins to have problems instantly wanting to run, taking off his hat, throwing it on the ground, etc. I did my best to soothe him and keep him in place.

In perfect teammate fashion, Bobby Grich chimed in and began counting with me and this player and did his best to help keep the boy happy. I couldn’t believe what I was experiencing. Because it was so late in the day, Bobby could have done what any other celebrity would do, walk off, take a break, sigh impatiently and a million other things.

Instead, he stayed right there, tried to help keep this overwhelmed player happy and in place and exhibited such kindness, patience and compassion.

Another heart-tugging Adenhart story

October 24th, 2009, 9:12 am by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

Ian O’Connor of the Bergen Record got a hold of Jim Adenhart Sr., Nick’s grandfather. The two Jim Adenharts watched Game 5 and were “hooting and hollering” when the Angels rallied to win.

They’re especially pulling for Jered Weaver, in part because his lanky build and delivery remind them so much of Nick.

Game time for Game 6… if it exists

October 22nd, 2009, 6:00 pm by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

Fox will start broadcasting from Yankee Stadium at 4:30 p.m. Pacific time and first pitch is scheduled for 4:57 p.m.

The game originally was scheduled to be played in the afternoon until the Philadelphia Phillies took care of the Dodgers in five games.

Changing the umps

October 22nd, 2009, 4:48 pm by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

Apparently, Major League Baseball has been stung by a sequence of bad calls by umpires in the playoffs, because the Associated Press is reporting they’re changing their selections for the World Series.

The umpires blew three calls on the base paths in Tuesday’s Game 4. Two of them went against the Angels, but none of them impacted the 10-1 score. After the game, veteran umpire Tim McClelland admitted he made two mistakes.

Long and gone

October 19th, 2009, 3:11 pm by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

The Angels decided to use Jered Weaver in Game 3 because, as a fly ball pitcher, he’s much better suited to pitching in a big stadium than at tiny Yankee Stadium.

It turns out, not even Angel Stadium could keep the Yankees in the yard. Home runs from Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon chased Weaver from the game after five innings. It was the first time this season Weaver had allowed three home runs in a start.

Weaver’s final line: 5 innings, 5 hits, 3 earned runs, a walk, four strikeouts.

No, Vlad’s not budging: lineups

October 19th, 2009, 12:11 pm by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia isn’t moved by the outcry to move Vladimir Guerrero out of the cleanup spot in this series. Guerrero had some uncomfortable-looking at-bats in Game 2 Saturday night, but his six hits lead the Angels this post-season. He also had the winning hit against the Boston Red Sox in the clinching Game 3 of the ALDS.
In other words, why is the focus on Vlad?

“We need some guys to get going. If they do, you’ll be presented with some options that might make a little more sense,” Scioscia said. “Right now, the biggest hit in the playoffs is the one Vlad got. Well, Torii’s home run was pretty big, too.”

Rainout plans

October 17th, 2009, 8:19 am by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

If tonight’s game is postponed — and Accuweather is saying it likely will be — Game 2 probably would be played Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time.

That would cause Game 3 in Anaheim to shift from Monday to Tuesday, and force the teams to play three games in a row Tuesday through Thursday.

Angels lay out their pitching plans

October 14th, 2009, 11:10 am by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced this morning the Angels’ starting-pitching plans for the first five games of his team’s American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.
After John Lackey pitches Friday night’s opener against C.C. Sabathia, lefty Joe Saunders will start Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Jered Weaver will pitch Game 3 in Anaheim, followed by Scott Kazmir.
If the series lasts five games, Lackey will make his final start of the series in Game 5. Beyond that, Scioscia wouldn’t divulge, but Weaver likely would pitch a deciding Game 7 if it comes to that.
Scioscia said a lot of factors went into the decision, but principle among them are the following: Weaver’s success at Angel Stadium (2.90 ERA) and Saunders’ hard sinker that should help keep the number of fly balls down at homer-happy Yankee Stadium.
“There wasn’t just one thing. It’s going to give us the best environment for these guys to give us a chance to win the games,” Scioscia said.

Who’s going to New York?

We’re looking for Angels fans traveling from Southern California to see their team play the Yankees this weekend in the ALCS.

If that’s you, or you know someone traveling to baseball’s new Mecca, Yankee Stadium, e-mail Mark Saxon at msaxon@ocregister.com. We’ll write about you.

Is it a lock?

October 9th, 2009, 10:54 pm by MARK SAXON, OCREGISTER.COM

Maybe not quite, since the Red Sox were 31 games above .500 at home this season, but the Angels are in awfully good shape historically speaking.

Since the division series format began, teams that take a 2-0 lead are 31-4.

On the other hand — the Red Sox have pulled off two of those four comebacks.

They lost the first two games to the Oakland A’s in the 2003 ALDS then came back to win the series. They did the same against the Indians in the 1999 ALDS.

The other two teams to come back after losing the first two games? The 2001 Yankees (against the A’s) and the 1995 Yankees (against the Mariners).
