It’s been a rough patch for us Angels fans.
And even though Paul Rudd was excited about getting a certain New York Yankees’ star (“It’s the baseball draft honey, I got Matsui!”) in “Knocked Up,” Matsui is not exactly the present I wanted Santa Arte to put under my tree.
Even though Jeff Miller thinks Angels fans like me are “idiots,” I agree with him. John Lackey has every right to take his $82 million from the team that broke the Angels’ hearts for years.
It’s a free country and yes, Mr. Miller, baseball is a business.
But it’s also my passion. I believe that part of the job of being a fan is becoming invested in your chosen team. John Lackey has every right to put on his new Boston baseball cap and show off his goofy$82 million grin.
And I have every right to hate him for it. I have every right to mourn the loss of Figgy, just like I mourned Eckstein and Erstad.
It’s my team, and I’ll cry if I want to.
Baseball is a big boy’s game run by very rich people who care very deeply about their personal bottom lines. But who wants to be a fan who doesn’t care when their favorite player moves on?
Will I boo Lackey when he comes to Anaheim next year?
Probably not.
Do I wish him luck?
I guess so.
But the stone-cold fact is — He’s not one of my guys anymore.
He’s gone to the dark side.
