A somewhat irreverent look the Angels-Red Sox ALDS

October 8th, 2009, 9:41 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

new-bloom-mug-for-ocrcom3Some thoughts as the clock ticks towards Tim Mead’s first pitch and the Angels-Red Sox opener …

John Lackey is starting, so of course catcher Jeff Mathis is, too. The only thing more predictable  is that great number of readers will point out Mike Napoli is a better offensive player.

Guess what? Mike Scioscia doesn’t like to lose. It’s OK to disagree with the manager, but at some point some fans might have to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, no matter what the numbers project.

This Angels team is one that likes to make projections look silly, remember?

And it might be easier to persuade Arte Moreno to get the team out of red uniforms.

Kotchman back with Braves

September 4th, 2008, 10:29 am by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Former Angel Casey Kotchman has rejoined the Atlanta Braves after missing two weeks to be with his ailing mother in Florida.

Kotchman talked with Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the situation.

Kotchman still not playing

August 28th, 2008, 12:13 am by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Former Angels first baseman Casey Kotchman was placed on the restricted list by the Atlanta Braves Wednesday after reaching the seven-day limit on the bereavement list.

Kotchman left the Braves a week ago to be with his family in Florida after his mother suffered a brain aneurysm. She remains in intensive care at a hospital in St. Petersburg.

When a player is unable to return to his team seven days after he is placed on the bereavement list, teams have to either place him on the restricted list or activate him (leaving them to play a man down with 24 players). Players on the restricted list are not paid during their absence.

Casey’s father, Tom Kotchman, left his duties as the manager of the Angels’ rookie league team in Orem, Utah and also remains in Florida.

Kotchman leaves Braves to be with family

August 20th, 2008, 9:14 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Former Angels first baseman Casey Kotchman was placed on the bereavement list by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and left the team to be with his mother who has been hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition.

Apparently, Kotchman got the news of this sudden illness following the Braves’ game in New York Tuesday night and called Braves manager Bobby Cox after midnight to let him know he would be leaving the team and heading to Florida.

Kotchman’s mother is the principal of an elementary school in Florida. His father, Tom, is manager of the Angels’ rookie league team in Orem, Utah and a long-time minor-league coach, manager and scout in the Angels’ system.

Teixeira leads Angels to series? Not so fast …

July 29th, 2008, 4:52 pm by Ellen Bell, Afternoon Angel

The Angels were shaping up to be one of the favorites to win the World Series, even before acquiring Mark Teixeira from the Atlanta Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman and a minor leaguer. With Teixeira in the Angels’ lineup along with Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter and Garret Anderson, the pressure will really be ramped up on their offense.

But it might not be a bad idea to temper some of that enthusiasm - Teixeira has not exactly crushed some of the pitchers that he could face in the postseason.

Kotchman reacts to trade

July 29th, 2008, 4:18 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Pulled from the field during batting practice and traded away from the team with the best record in baseball, first baseman Casey Kotchman had an odd reaction to the news — he was smiling broadly as he talked on the cellphone and later answered questions from the media.

Angels shake up baseball world with trade

July 29th, 2008, 3:44 pm by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

What a jolt. And the earthquake was pretty profound, too.

No one can accuse the Angels of lacking chutzpah anymore after they dealt Casey Kotchman to Atlanta today for Mark Teixeira, who (A) is a prospective free agent and (B) is a Scott Boras client, and Boras clients usually don’t love the one they’re with. This also removes the stealth factor from the Angels’ drive to reach another World Series. They will be the trendy favorites now to go at least that far.

Angels 7, Red Sox 5 (final)

July 28th, 2008, 7:22 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

The Angels went into their house of horrors, Fenway Park, and kept their winning streak against the Boston Red Sox rolling thanks to the kind of explosive inning that the Sox have made their trademark.

Trailing 2-1 through five innings, the Angels sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored six times on six hits, a walk and a squeeze bunt by Jeff Mathis. Casey Kotchman had a two-run home run in the inning (his career-high 12th of the season including one in each of his three starts on this trip) and Torii Hunter a three-run shot (also his third on the trip).

The six runs matched the Angels’ high for an inning this season and came off Daisuke Matsuzaka who came into the game with an 11-1 record and 2.63 ERA.

It took some work to make it stand up, though. Starter Jered Weaver lasted just 5 2/3 innings, exiting with runners on second and third after Jed Lowrie’s two-out RBI double.

Jose Arredondo, Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez then tiptoed through a 3 1/3-inning minefield of five hits and two walks, stranding six runners before Rodriguez secured the victory with his 44th save of the season — only after giving up a two-out, solo home run to Manny Ramirez in the ninth.

The six-game winning streak against the Red Sox this season is the Angels’ longest against them since they won eight consecutive meetings August 26, 1961 through May 30, 1962.

Angels vs. Red Sox redux

July 28th, 2008, 2:44 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Every team has its drama.too-manny-issues.jpg

The Red Sox have the ongoing surreality series involving Manny Ramirez and his pay-me-or-trade-me pouts. The Angels have a prank fight between two members of the broadcast crew involving missing shoes and broken pencils which Angels manager Mike Scioscia jokingly tried to arbitrate before the game today.

The local papers were splayed out on one of the tables in the visitors’ clubhouse, complete with the “I Dare You” headline on one tabloid. More than one Angel player walked by and shook his head at the headline.

Angels catcher Mike Napoli said he worked out with Ramirez during the winter before last.

“I like Manny,” Napoli said. “He’s a good guy.”

So, what do you think of his trade demands?

“He can go to the National League if he wants,” Napoli said. “I don’t like seeing him at the plate.”

Today’s lineups follow:
