Saunders still struggling with kidney stone

September 22nd, 2008, 7:12 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels left-hander Joe Saunders was not at the stadium with the team this afternoon. Instead, he was paying a visit to a local doctor to see what can be done to alleviate the discomfort he’s feeling froma kidney stone.

Saunders still suffering, won’t start Tuesday

September 21st, 2008, 12:48 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Joe Saunders walked gingerly into the visitor’s clubhouse this morning – but he’s walking gingerly everywhere he goes.

The Angels left-hander is still waiting to pass a kidney stone that has left him in significant discomfort since Friday night. Saunders went to the hospital with the abdominal pain Friday and was given medication for the pain and told the stone should pass in 48 hours. As of Sunday morning, it hadn’t.

“I’m hanging in there,” Saunders said. “The pain the other night when I went to the hospital was the worst pain I’ve felt in my life. It was just constant hell.”

Saunders will not make his next start, scheduled for Tuesday in Seattle. Instead, the Angels will move Jered Weaver and Jon Garland up a day to pitch Tuesday and Wednesday (still on normal rest) then use a spot starter (most likely, Dustin Moseley again) on Thursday.

Saunders will return to the rotation for a final pre-playoff start on Sunday in the regular-season finale at Angel Stadium. That would give him six days’ rest before Game 3 of the American League Division Series.

Vlad’s back — Angels vs. Rangers Saturday

September 20th, 2008, 2:40 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

After getting the past six games (and seven days) off to rest his ailing right knee, Vladimir Guerrero is back in the lineup — and in right field — for tonight’s game against the Rangers.

So is Erick Aybar. Aybar played his first full game Friday since injuring his hamstring on August 27 — and it was a very full game (the Angels’ 15-13, nearly four-hour affair). Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Aybar would play again today if he came out of that game feeling strong and would then get Sunday’s day game off.

Interesting choice to put Guerrero back in the lineup tonight. There is some history between him and Rangers starter Vicente Padilla.

Moseley will start for Angels Saturday

September 18th, 2008, 1:12 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

When the Angels decided to give John Lackey (nine days) and Ervin Santana (seven days) some downtime and re-align their starting rotation for the playoffs, it created the necessity for a spot start down the stretch. Dustin Moseley will make that start on Saturday in Texas.

It is the third start this month for Moseley who had mixed results in the first two. He was awful in Chicago, lasting just 1 1/3 innings while allowing four runs. He seemed to be headed in that same direction when he gave up two runs in the first inning of his next start, Sept. 10 against the Yankees. But he settled down and allowed no more in a five-inning stint.

Jepsen, Bulger, Speier — who do you want?

September 16th, 2008, 7:09 am by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Some day, Kevin Jepsen is going to have a lot of stories to tell his kids about the year 2008.

The trip to China for the Olympics. Making his major-league debut. Blowing a 95-mph fastball past the great Alex Rodriguez for his first major-league strikeout.

Making his playoff debut?

“No, I’m not thinking about that,” the Angels’ rookie right-hander said of speculation that he could make the Angels’ post-season roster. “I’m just trying to, when I get the chance to get in there, get the job done — whatever the situation, I’ll take it.

“I’m not really worried about anything else.”

Four spots in the Angels’ post-season bullpen are spoken for — closer Francisco Rodriguez, setup men Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo and left-hander Darren Oliver. Another will likely be taken up by the starting pitcher bounced out of the rotation (Jered Weaver?).

That probably leaves just one more spot for a reliever.

Which pitcher should make the playoff roster?

Angels start setting up rotation for playoffs

September 11th, 2008, 7:44 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Now that the division has been clinched, manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels have “some things we’re going to do to our rotation to let guys refresh.”

Scioscia said John Lackey (whose most recent start came on Saturday in Chicago) will not start again until Tuesday in Oakland, giving him nine days off between starts. Ervin Santana will start Sunday in the homestand finale then get “a week off,” according to Scioscia.

The changes will create the need for at least one spot start down the stretch (on Sept. 20 in Texas) with Dustin Moseley and Shane Loux (eligible to come off the disabled list on Sunday) the candidates on hand.

It also sets Lackey and Santana up to pitch Games 1 and 2 of a first-round playoff series with Saunders and Garland (in that order) behind them. Jered Weaver remains the most likely candidate from the starting rotation to move to the bullpen for the first round.

Bulger promoted; Saturday’s lineups

September 6th, 2008, 3:00 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

After dipping into his bullpen for a spot start from Dustin Moseley Friday and then 6 2/3 innings more from Darren Oliver, Darren O’Day and Justin Speier when Moseley flamed out in the second inning, Angels manager Mike Scioscia felt the need for a fresh arm.

So right-hander Jason Bulger was promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake and joined the team in Chicago Saturday afternoon.

White Sox 10, Angels 2 (final)

September 5th, 2008, 7:59 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

The Angels never recovered after Dustin Moseley’s poor start put them in an early hole.

The White Sox hit three home runs in the first three innings — a pair of two-run home runs by Juan Uribe and a solo shot by Paul Konerko. They have now hit 23 home runs in their past eight games and lead the majors with 204 home runs this season, 124 at homer-happy U.S. Cellular Field.

The 10 runs were the most allowed by Angels pitching since their 12-inning, 10-7 loss to the Seattle Mariners on August 13.

Nonetheless, their magic number to clinch the division will shrunk to five with a Rangers loss to the Red Sox.

Moseley exits in second inning

September 5th, 2008, 6:08 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Dustin Moseley’s return to the Angels’ starting rotation didn’t last long.

Moseley was knocked out of the game in the second inning by the White Sox. He retired just four of the 12 batters he faced, allowing four runs on six hits including a two-run home run by Juan Uribe.

Moseley is making a spot start in place of Jered Weaver who suffered cuts on two fingers of his pitching hand during  the series in Detroit. Weaver played catch before Friday’s game with bandages on the injured fingers and is expected to return to the rotation on Monday.

Darren Oliver replaced Moseley and just gave up a leadoff home run to Paul Konerko in the third inning to put the Angels down 5-0.

The White Sox lead the majors with 203 home runs including 123 now at home (and 22 in their past eight games).
