How much is Garret worth?

October 31st, 2008, 6:00 am by Brian Perdue

Garret Anderson was eligible to file for free agency Wednesday.

Orange County Register reporter Eric Neff, a longtime Angels fan, raises an interesting question: How much is Garret worth?

For you Angel fans returning from Mars, Register reporter Bill Plunkett provides a good summary: “The Angels announced Tuesday they would not exercise the club option for 2009 in Anderson’s contract, paying him a $3 million buyout rather than a $14 million salary next season. The longest-tenured Angel in franchise history with 2,013 games over 14 seasons will be eligible to file for free agency for the first time in his career the day after the conclusion of the World Series.”

The Angels would probably like to re-sign him at a cheaper salary. Anderson would probably get more money from an American League team needing more pop than the Angels (Are there any that need more “pop” than the Angels?), but Garret has deep roots here. Besides spending his entire career with the Angels, he was born and raised in Southern California.

I think I speak for most Angel fans who hope that the front office finds a way to sign Garret, if only for a year. He deserves it - if only to say a proper goodbye next fall.

Who will play left field?

Who will play left field for the Angels next season?

The hole can be filled by existing Angels such as Juan Rivera, Reggie Willits or Chone Figgins, or GA could come back at a reduced pay scale. But considering the Angels’ subpar offense, who wants to replace GA’s power with Willits or Figgins? Both players are popular - but they lack the offensive pop the lineup desperately needs.

In-house, Rivera seems the most likely choice - but there may also be a drop in offensive production.

Here are three left fielders who will probably be the most coveted free agents, with their 2008 stats:

L.A.’s Manny Ramirez: .332 batting average, .430 on-base percentage, .601 slugging percentage, 37 home runs, 121 runs batted in.

Colorado’s Matt Holliday: .321 BA, .409 OBP, .538 SP, 25 HR, 88 RBI

Philadelphia’s Pat Burrell: .250 BA, .367 OBP, .507 SP, 33 HR, 86 RBI

Seattle’s Raul Ibanez: .293 BA, .358 OBP, .479 SP, 23 HR, 110 RBI

What will Anderson’s legacy be?

October 28th, 2008, 4:18 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

This article ran in the Orange County Register on March 20, 2007. It’s worth re-visiting with today’s news that the Angels had bought out Garret Anderson’s contract and the longest-tenured player in Angels history might have played his last game for them.

By BILL PLUNKETT

There is gray in Garret Anderson’s hair now.

It has crept in the way Anderson goes about his job — quietly, without fanfare and probably only noticed by those close to him. Outwardly, little else seems to have changed about Anderson over the past 13 seasons.

“He’s been a rock. I’ve always said he’s the rock in that lineup,” said Darin Erstad, Anderson’s teammate for 11 of those seasons.

But the landscape around that rock has changed significantly in nearly 13 years.

Vlad and Lackey will be back; Garret may not

October 28th, 2008, 12:13 pm by Brian Perdue

The Angels have exercised their 2009 options on pitcher Jon Lackey and slugger Vladimir Guerrero, beat writer Bill Plunkett has confirmed. But they declined their option on Garret Anderson.

Lackey, 30, will receive $9 million while Guerrero, 32, will earn $15 million.

Game 4 lineups — Angels vs. Red Sox

October 6th, 2008, 1:56 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Only one slight change in the Angels’ lineup for Game 4 — Mike Napoli moves ahead of Juan Rivera, no shock considering the way Napoli has been hitting since the end of August.

For the Red Sox, Mike Lowell will take his gimpy hip to the bench again. J.D. Drew and his balky back are in the lineup (as is former Cal State-Fullerton star Mark Kotsay).

And Angels manager Mike Scioscia said this afternoon that last night’s 7 1/3 scoreless-inning effort from his bullpen will not limit his options tonight.

“Everybody’s available,” Scioscia said. “Even Jered (Weaver).”

Tonight’s lineups follow:

Game 2 starting lineups — Angels vs. Red Sox

October 3rd, 2008, 3:25 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Both teams made changes for today’s Game 2. Gimpy third baseman Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox’s starting lineup. Sox manager Terry Francona indicated Thursday that he wanted to save Lowell for Game 3 in Boston against Angels left-hander Joe Saunders.

Former Cal State-Fullerton hero Mark Kotsay (not Sean Casey) gets the start at first base with Kevin Youkilis moving to third. Alex Cora is in for Jed Lowrie at shortstop as well.

The Angels, meanwhile, made only minimal changes in response to their ongoing playoff slump (as manager Mike Scioscia indicated he would). Juan Rivera is in for Gary Matthews Jr. and Jeff Mathis is in to catch Ervin Santana.

Thinking outside the box — Angels lineup changes?

October 3rd, 2008, 9:23 am by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia would not divulge his Game 2 lineup during Thursday’s off-day workout. He said only that he was “considering a few things” but “the core of our lineup will remain the same.” Read the rest of this entry »

He also revealed the Angels’ roster for the first-round series. They will go with a 10-man pitching staff including both displaced starters (Jon Garland and Jered Weaver) and rookie reliever Kevin Jepsen (who did not make his big-league debut until Sept. 8).
