Peavy decision due soon

December 11th, 2008, 10:06 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

The San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs are still talking about the Jake Peavy deal, with the close of baseball’s winter meetings Thursday set as an arbitrary deadline.
Three or four teams will be involved if Peavy is moved to the Cubs.
Jason Marquis, Mark DeRosa and others might be changing teams if the long-awaited swap gets completed.
Over at The Halo Is Lit, blogger Jim makes an interesting career comparison between Peavy and the Angels’ Jered Weaver (pictured). It’s worth a look, and opened my eyes somewhat.
I have always regarded Weaver as a quality pitcher but hadn’t projected him as a staff No. 1 someday. The Peavy comparisons indicate it’s possible.
It is always difficult to compare pitchers who sign out of high school (Peavy) and those who sign out of college (Weaver), but Jim — who is always thorough — covers the ground well.
The totals of their first three seasons compare favorably for Weaver.
It’s worth a look.

Weaver talks about first relief appearance

October 13th, 2008, 7:47 am by Brian Perdue
The Angels' Jered Weaver pitches during the Halos' 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Jered Weaver in Game 3.

In the previous 78 major league games in which he has played, Jered Weaver had trotted out as the starting pitcher.

Yet, in the 11th inning of Game 3 of the Angels’ ALDS game against Boston, Weaver was called out of the bullpen for the first time as a major leaguer.

The former Long Beach State Dirtbag responded by pitching two scoreless innings in the Angels’ 5-4 win - the club’s first playoff victory since 2005.

Weaver talks about the experience in today’s Washington Post:

Game 4 lineups — Angels vs. Red Sox

October 6th, 2008, 1:56 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Only one slight change in the Angels’ lineup for Game 4 — Mike Napoli moves ahead of Juan Rivera, no shock considering the way Napoli has been hitting since the end of August.

For the Red Sox, Mike Lowell will take his gimpy hip to the bench again. J.D. Drew and his balky back are in the lineup (as is former Cal State-Fullerton star Mark Kotsay).

And Angels manager Mike Scioscia said this afternoon that last night’s 7 1/3 scoreless-inning effort from his bullpen will not limit his options tonight.

“Everybody’s available,” Scioscia said. “Even Jered (Weaver).”

Tonight’s lineups follow:

Angels set playoff roster — Jepsen in, Speier out

September 28th, 2008, 6:08 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed the obvious after Sunday’s game – that John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders (in that order) will start in the first round against the Boston Red Sox.

He also revealed the Angels’ roster for the first-round series. They will go with a 10-man pitching staff including both displaced starters (Jon Garland and Jered Weaver) and rookie reliever Kevin Jepsen (who did not make his big-league debut until Sept. 8).

Left out is veteran reliever Justin Speier.

The 15 position players include both Reggie Willits and Gary Matthews Jr. as well as Kendry Morales and Brandon Wood but not Sean Rodriguez.

Here’s the list:

Playoff preview? Angels vs. Mariners lineups

September 23rd, 2008, 5:54 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Howie Kendrick felt fine after his first game back on the field Monday night so he’s back in there again tonight. Probably only for five innings then a day off tomorrow before trying to go the distance Thursday.

With him back, tonight’s lineup could very well be the one you see in Game 1 of the playoffs (with the possible exception of Juan Rivera replacing Gary Matthews Jr. and the DH spot moving around).

Saunders still struggling with kidney stone

September 22nd, 2008, 7:12 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels left-hander Joe Saunders was not at the stadium with the team this afternoon. Instead, he was paying a visit to a local doctor to see what can be done to alleviate the discomfort he’s feeling froma kidney stone.

Saunders still suffering, won’t start Tuesday

September 21st, 2008, 12:48 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Joe Saunders walked gingerly into the visitor’s clubhouse this morning – but he’s walking gingerly everywhere he goes.

The Angels left-hander is still waiting to pass a kidney stone that has left him in significant discomfort since Friday night. Saunders went to the hospital with the abdominal pain Friday and was given medication for the pain and told the stone should pass in 48 hours. As of Sunday morning, it hadn’t.

“I’m hanging in there,” Saunders said. “The pain the other night when I went to the hospital was the worst pain I’ve felt in my life. It was just constant hell.”

Saunders will not make his next start, scheduled for Tuesday in Seattle. Instead, the Angels will move Jered Weaver and Jon Garland up a day to pitch Tuesday and Wednesday (still on normal rest) then use a spot starter (most likely, Dustin Moseley again) on Thursday.

Saunders will return to the rotation for a final pre-playoff start on Sunday in the regular-season finale at Angel Stadium. That would give him six days’ rest before Game 3 of the American League Division Series.

Angels’ injury woes get worse (Figgins, Hunter)

September 17th, 2008, 6:25 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Instead of giving more time to get healthy for the playoffs, clinching the division so early has just given the Angels more time to sustain more injuries.

The latest new name on that list is Torii Hunter. But another name that seemed to be off the list is back on — Chone Figgins.

Figgins will leave the team Thursday and return to Southern California to have his sore right elbow re-examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum. Figgins said he expects to have a second set of X-rays taken and probably an MRI as well.

“It’s just the soreness isn’t going away,” Figgins said. “With ice and things like that, the soreness usually goes away. … I just wonder why it’s not going away. That’s what I want to know.”

Figgins was hit by a pitch on Sept. 8 and originally missed four games then returned to DH twice before playing third base for the first time since the injury Tuesday. He never had a ball hit to him to test his arm but he came away from the game “a little bit stiff,” according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

“It’s just a little precautionary,” Scioscia said of tomorrow’s exam. “They want to take a look at it.”

Meanwhile, Hunter was scratched from tonight’s lineup with a self-inflicted injury.

Hunter was taking some swings in the batting cages under the stands and lined a ball off the L-screen that protects the pitcher. The ball caromed back and hit Hunter in the right cheek, sending him to the trainer’s room for an ice pack. The cheek is bruised and swollen but the injury is not considered serious.

Tonight’s re-written lineups follow:

Jepsen, Bulger, Speier — who do you want?

September 16th, 2008, 7:09 am by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Some day, Kevin Jepsen is going to have a lot of stories to tell his kids about the year 2008.

The trip to China for the Olympics. Making his major-league debut. Blowing a 95-mph fastball past the great Alex Rodriguez for his first major-league strikeout.

Making his playoff debut?

“No, I’m not thinking about that,” the Angels’ rookie right-hander said of speculation that he could make the Angels’ post-season roster. “I’m just trying to, when I get the chance to get in there, get the job done — whatever the situation, I’ll take it.

“I’m not really worried about anything else.”

Four spots in the Angels’ post-season bullpen are spoken for — closer Francisco Rodriguez, setup men Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo and left-hander Darren Oliver. Another will likely be taken up by the starting pitcher bounced out of the rotation (Jered Weaver?).

That probably leaves just one more spot for a reliever.

Which pitcher should make the playoff roster?

Angels start setting up rotation for playoffs

September 11th, 2008, 7:44 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Now that the division has been clinched, manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels have “some things we’re going to do to our rotation to let guys refresh.”

Scioscia said John Lackey (whose most recent start came on Saturday in Chicago) will not start again until Tuesday in Oakland, giving him nine days off between starts. Ervin Santana will start Sunday in the homestand finale then get “a week off,” according to Scioscia.

The changes will create the need for at least one spot start down the stretch (on Sept. 20 in Texas) with Dustin Moseley and Shane Loux (eligible to come off the disabled list on Sunday) the candidates on hand.

It also sets Lackey and Santana up to pitch Games 1 and 2 of a first-round playoff series with Saunders and Garland (in that order) behind them. Jered Weaver remains the most likely candidate from the starting rotation to move to the bullpen for the first round.
