Shopping for pitchers: Garland, Wagner hit the market

August 20th, 2009, 7:19 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Playoff hopefuls desperate for pitching can add shopping-cartright-handed starter Jon Garland and left-handed reliever Billy Wagner to their lists.

According to Fox Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Garland has cleared waivers. He is kind of a pricey acquisition, however, as Jon Paul Morosi notes, with about $4 million owed on his deal, including a 2010 buyout.

Garland pitched for the Angels last season, but they remain verbally committed to fixing their rotation from within.

Former closer Wagner has been put on waivers by the New York Mets, ESPN has reported, and would clear them Friday — the day he is to be activated after missing most of the season because of Tommy John surgery.

Teams needing bullpen hope will be watching the lefty closely as he sees his first major-league action since 2008.

One blogger’s opinion: Angels should avoid Teixeira, Sabathia, Ramirez

November 26th, 2008, 11:30 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

First things first: The opinion reflected in the headline above is NOT this blogger’s opinion.
But Joe Florkowski at Big A Baseball makes his case on the matter, suggesting the Angels have so many holes to fill, spending gobs of cash in this uncertain economy for one big-name player, even Mark Teixeira (pictured in cold-weather gear) won’t make a difference.
Florkowski points out the 2009 Angels already figure to be without Francisco Rodriguez (62 saves), Garret Anderson (84 RBIs), Jon Garland (14 victories), backup OF Juan Rivera and possibly Teixeira from their 100-victory squad of 2008.
Teixeira, Manny Ramirez or CC Sabathia can’t plug all those holes, he contends.
We are in agreement that Kendry Morales presents a viable lineup option who should be deployed next season. That could be at first base; in left if Anderson doesn’t return; or in right if Vladimir Guerrero is pretty much the fulltime DH — the direction the Angels seem to be heading with that slugger.

Dodgers’ Lowe climbs high on free-agent board

November 24th, 2008, 8:30 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Interest from the Red Sox and Yankees is driving up the price for Dodgers free agent right-hander Derek Lowe, right.
With agent Scott Boras looking for a five-year deal in the $15 million-$16 million a year range, the New York Daily News reports the Lowe pricetag is too steep for the Mets, who might turn their attention to Angels free agent Jon Garland.
The rotation spot the Mets want to plug was filled in 2008 by left-hander Oliver Perez,  who apparently is too pricey to return to New York’s NL franchise.
A starter available via trade is Chicago White Sox right-hander Javier Vazquez, 33, who is two years younger than Lowe but has two years and $24 million left on his deal.
Whatever the Mets do might have an effect on the Angels, who are looking to fill Garland’s spot.

Padres put Peavy on the market

October 17th, 2008, 10:59 am by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

If the Angels choose not to re-sign potential free agent Jon Garland, they will be in the market for a starting pitcher this off-season to fill out their rotation. (And, no, Kelvim Escobar is not a candidate. He is expected to be out until at least mid-season recovering from shoulder surgery — and could very well return in a bullpen role when he does.)

Apparently, CC Sabathia will not be the only Cy Young option available. After a disastrous finish this season, the San Diego Padres are exploring the possibility of trading their ace, right-hander Jake Peavy.

While Sabathia will be a free agent this winter and is expected to draw mega-million dollar offers from the Yankees among others, Peavy is signed through the next four seasons at what passes for reasonable salaries for a former Cy Young Award winner (starting at $11 million next season up to $17 million in 2012).

The problem is that same contract also includes a no-trade clause so Peavy can dictate where he goes. Tom Krasovic reports in this story in the San Diego Union-Tribune that Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, indicated Peavy has a decided preference for staying in the National League — though the Angels’ status as a perennial contender and close proximity to Peavy’s home north of San Diego make them a possible candidate.

Before you get too excited, keep this in mind — the Padres will be seeking an ace’s ransomfor Peavy to jump start their rebuilding plans. A package of spare parts won’t get it done. The Angels would have to part with a handful of prospects and proven major-leaguers — a package every bit as attractive as they offered for Miguel Cabrera a year ago. (Think Howie Kendrick, Joe Saunders, Reggie Willits and Nick Adenhart.)

Angels set playoff roster — Jepsen in, Speier out

September 28th, 2008, 6:08 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed the obvious after Sunday’s game – that John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders (in that order) will start in the first round against the Boston Red Sox.

He also revealed the Angels’ roster for the first-round series. They will go with a 10-man pitching staff including both displaced starters (Jon Garland and Jered Weaver) and rookie reliever Kevin Jepsen (who did not make his big-league debut until Sept. 8).

Left out is veteran reliever Justin Speier.

The 15 position players include both Reggie Willits and Gary Matthews Jr. as well as Kendry Morales and Brandon Wood but not Sean Rodriguez.

Here’s the list:

Angels 6, Mariners 5 (final)

September 24th, 2008, 10:12 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

The Mariners got to 100 first.

The Angels made the Mariners the first 100-game losers in the majors this season while moving a step closer to their own century mark (for victories).

They had to overcome a poor start by Jon Garland to do it. Garland gave up five runs on 11 hits in five innings. But the Angels pounded out 16 hits against three different Mariners pitchers (starting with Felix Hernandez) and finally took the lead on Mark Teixeira’s solo home run off reliever Mark Lowe with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

Scot Shields worked out of a self-created bases-loaded jam (two walks and a hit batsman) in the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 62nd save.

With the win, the Angels remained two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays for best record in the American League, shaving their magic number to clinch that honor to three. They need to win just two of their final four games to reach 100 victories for the first time in franchise history.
