Some thoughts about Jim Thome, Yankees pitching, etc.

September 2nd, 2009, 6:35 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

n1539169180_8525I don’t care how the Dodgers use Hall of Fame-bound slugger Jim Thome, if he wins them just one game, and then is on their roster if they reach the World Series so he can DH in the AL park, it will be well worth it.

I seem to recall Eddie Murray getting a big September hit for the Dodgers late in his career, and Dave Parker — yes, the post-Angels Dave Parker — doing so for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Unless Class-A infielder Justin Fuller turns out to be the next Jeff Bagwell, which apparently unlikely, it’s win-win for the Dodgers and Thome, who will also boost Manny Ramirez’s spirits.

In regards to Fuller, a Class-A utility infielder at age 26, I was once told Mark Sweeney was a non-prospect in the Angels organization. Sweeney only spent 14 years in the big leagues, mostly as a pinch-hitter and extra man, but in the bigs.

Are Angels’ Triple-A stats flawed both ways?

February 9th, 2009, 10:00 am by Earl Bloom, staff writer

I first remember experiencing “ballpark effect” in my Strat-O-Matic days, but we’re not rolling dice for the baseball results we’re talking about here.

If the gaudy, Triple-A hitting stats of Angels prospects Brandon Wood and Sean Rodriguez are skewed by half their games in hitter-friendly Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake, aren’t those awful ERAs of the pitchers also totally out of whack?

I mean, you can’t have it both ways. Or can you?

This has been bugging me for some time, and perhaps my colleague Sam Miller or some other statistically enterprising blogger or fan can help me with it.

I keep looking at these 2008 Salt Lake batting numbers:

Sean Rodriguez, .305 AVG/.397 OBP/.645 SLG/1.042 OPS; 21 HRs, 52 RBIs, 66 G
Brandon Wood, .296/.375/.595/.970, 31 HRs, 84 RBIs, 103 G
Freddy Sandoval (pictured), .335/.389/.514/.903, 15 HRs, 88 RBIs, 131 G

… and I have to figure one or more of them should be able to plug the holes in the Angels lineup someday.

I remember the guys coming up to the Dodgers with the big numbers from Albuquerque in the 70’s and 80’s. A lot of those guys could play, even if the numbers didn’t fully translate.

And then, there are these Salt Lake ERAs: Nick Green (5.32), Nick Adenhart (5.76), Dustin Moseley (6.94). Are they inflated by a run? Two?

What then to think of Jason Bulger (0.63), Kevin Jepsen (2.35) and Anthony Ortega (2.52), who actually pitched well despite pitching in Salt Lake half the time.

If you’ve got the ballpark effect conversion chart for the PCL, pass it on.

Angels set playoff roster — Jepsen in, Speier out

September 28th, 2008, 6:08 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed the obvious after Sunday’s game – that John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders (in that order) will start in the first round against the Boston Red Sox.

He also revealed the Angels’ roster for the first-round series. They will go with a 10-man pitching staff including both displaced starters (Jon Garland and Jered Weaver) and rookie reliever Kevin Jepsen (who did not make his big-league debut until Sept. 8).

Homoeroticism in Angels clubhouse, or just too much analyzing?

September 22nd, 2008, 10:10 am by Al Balderas, staff writer

When colleague Bill Plunkett recently wrote about the Angels’ annual hazing tradition, in which the Angels’ rookies were subjected to wearing women’s clothing on their flight from Oakland to Texas, Des Martini, of examiner.com might have responded with a little too much over-analysis.

Yes, Darren O’Day had to wear a purple mini-dress. Sean Rodriguez and Freddy Sandoval were Hooters Girls for a day. Others were also left to wear an array of skirts and dresses.

Figgins back — Angels vs. Rangers Sunday

September 21st, 2008, 12:01 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Slowly, the Angels are starting to get are their parts back.

Saturday, Vladimir Guerrero returned to the lineup after a week off to rest his ailing right knee. (He’s at DH today).

Today, Chone Figgins is back at third base for the first time since Tuesday. Tomorrow — or Tuesday — Howie Kendrick could be back on the field to test his injured hamstring.

This could mean a lot of questions about the Angels’ playoff roster will be answered in the next few days.

“I think every day we keep getting good news from these guys there’s one less scenario you have to worry about — and that’s good,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “The guys we need to get healthy are getting back in there.”

Today’s lineups follow:

Vlad’s back — Angels vs. Rangers Saturday

September 20th, 2008, 2:40 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

After getting the past six games (and seven days) off to rest his ailing right knee, Vladimir Guerrero is back in the lineup — and in right field — for tonight’s game against the Rangers.

So is Erick Aybar. Aybar played his first full game Friday since injuring his hamstring on August 27 — and it was a very full game (the Angels’ 15-13, nearly four-hour affair). Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Aybar would play again today if he came out of that game feeling strong and would then get Sunday’s day game off.

Interesting choice to put Guerrero back in the lineup tonight. There is some history between him and Rangers starter Vicente Padilla.

Tonight’s lineups:

ANGELS

SS Erick Aybar

DH Garret Anderson

1B Mark Teixeira

RF Vladimir Guerrero

CF Torii Hunter

LF Gary Matthews Jr.

3B Brandon Wood

C  Jeff Mathis

2B Sean Rodriguez

RHP Dustin Moseley

RANGERS

2B Joaquin Arias

SS German Duran

CF Josh Hamilton

DH Milton Bradley

LF Marlon Byrd

1B Hank Blalock

RF Nelson Cruz

C  Gerald Laird

3B Chris Davis

Still no Vlad — Angels vs. Rangers

September 19th, 2008, 4:03 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM
Forget Waldo - where's Vlady?

Forget Waldo - where's Vladdy?

When Vladimir Guerrero left last Friday’s game against the Seattle Mariners after four innings with a sore right knee, the Angels assured us it was nothing major, just a day-to-day thing.

Over the next couple days, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he expected Guerrero to play during the Oakland series.

After an MRI and a visit to Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday, the Oakland series went by with no appearance by Guerrero. The word changed. Scioscia said he “expected” Guerrero to play Friday in Texas.

It’s Friday. It’s Texas. And Guerrero is still not in the lineup.

Angels “turn the page” on sloppy loss

September 18th, 2008, 1:01 pm by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia isn’t one to let his team dwell on a particular win or loss — but he also isn’t one to let a sloppy inning like the Wednesday’s ninth go.

“We cleaned some stuff up this morning, made sure guys were on the same page,” Scioscia said before today’s game, using his trademark euphemism for calling players on the carpet. “You’re going to have things like that fall through the cracks from time to time. … We’ve got a lot of youth on the field right now.”

The play that stuck in Scioscia’s ample craw from Wednesday was not the game-ending throwing error by Francisco Rodriguez. That was an error that came out of “trying to make a  play,” Scioscia said of the wild throw on Cliff Pennington’s “Baltimore chop” off home plate.

The inning was set up by the misplay of Daric Barton’s leadoff single. Centerfielder Gary Matthews Jr. fielded it and short-hopped his throw to second baseman Sean Rodriguez who let it go, thinking shortstop Brandon Wood was backing him up. But Wood wasn’t prepared and the ball hopped past him. Francisco Rodriguez’s back was turned and he wasn’t in position to back up the backup on the play so Barton advanced to second while the ball rolled loose.

“When something like that happens, it’s definitely a teaching moment — especially for the young guys,” Scioscia said.
